Icelandic Chickens

You probably need some Delawares, so you could have reliable layers, and not need to buy eggs at the grocery store.

here's hoping they keep laying so I can put some Icelandic eggs in my bator on Dec. 11th for the New Years Day Hatch.

Gorgeous chicks.

Kathy,

I have three pullets waiting to join the flock as my new layers. I have one BCM (Marianne), one Wellsummer (Ginger) and one Blue Ameraucana (Mrs. Howell)! Other than my Icelandics I have three retired hens who lay whenever they darn well feel like it, and a Wheaten Ameraucana. Stella my Icelandic/EE mix hasn't laid in months. Not sure why. She may be older but I have no idea since she flew over our fence and got this whole Icelandic thing going in the first place. She, Martha Stewart, Judge Judy, Skye, and blind Lucy have forever homes with us. We don't eat many eggs anyway and I should have plenty.

Mahonri,
They don't seem to be slowing down. I will be sending 13 or 14 out tomorrow.

I've been down in KY visiting the boys the last three days and a friend was doing chicken chores for me. I didn't have her check the "Ice House" for eggs because no one in that coop was laying yet (Anna and Asta, Icelandics; Bertha, Ava and Shrimp, Red Sex Links; Heidi and Iman, Silver Laced Wyandottes). I saw Anna and Asta both squat for Ari this morning and noticed their combs were much redder than when I left. Hmmmm...I thought...maybe I should check the nests....and sure enough.....there were the four eggs you see pictured below. The egg at the 9 o'clock position is the first egg (different pen) from my Wyandotte girl born May 4 and laid earlier this week. The larger egg is from one of my Wyandotte hens, just for comparison. They aren't a pure white color though....I put them on a white paper towel for contrast.....does this mean they have something else in them? Mary, you said these girls are from eggs you got from Marty, are any of the rest from this hatch laying yet?!
