Icelandic Chickens

No, no vaseline, I have added another tarp on the side, the rose combs just had black tips, the single comb has an inch or two towards the back. This will be an interesting test for them, no hens yet with any signs of frostbite.

On my own frostbites I never cut any away, watched them close, took the scab off when it was time. A strong antibiotic works better on any infection then surgery which just adds another wound to the equation. Surgery is only indicated if there is gangrene, not before.

So, Kathy, what kind and how many turkeys are you getting?

Porter's Sweetgrass look really nice!
Love the color pattern, have to do some more research on weights, etc.
You are all going to love turkeys!!
They are a serious kick in the head & will make you laugh every time you hear them all goble.

On the Frostbitten Roosters, I can see where SCs will be a negative selection factor, and the two little guys coming may well get a real closer look for their future use. So far not a trace of frostbite on any of the hens, and one of the RCs had less then the other, Blau. Time will tell.

Re Turkeys if I was going to go with large Turkeys I'd go back with the Wishard, they were the most trouble free turkey that I have ever had, a great free ranging bird that comes in to be fed, quiet to be around and the hens raised their poults well. They do roost in the trees around but I had no trouble with them coming in for feed, and I fed them in a shed so no problem on keeping any in to process. But, now , while I loved them, if I get any it will be a smaller bird, without a family raising 30lb Toms doesnt make a whole lot of sense. Now, crossing them with Midget Whites just might produce something more in line with what I want.

Good to have these little chats, gets me thinking outside the box.

So, I just introduced 2 cockerels and 3 pullets to the gen pop, and already one of the older hens (A buff Ameraucana) has decided she "likes" her new mate (the one Chickielady took to the show). He has done his introductory "dance" for her. One older Australorp is following around one of the little pullets, guarding her from all the rest. The ducks are extremely interested in all of the new birds. The goose is aloof, as usual.

Sadly, one cockerel which I really like is not having a very good time. Nobody seems to like him (except me) so unless things change over the next few days he may not be staying. His comb is pretty bloody and when I was down there, he was trying to hide from everyone. Hubby says I have until the solstice to choose which ones I keep.

The other 4 cockerels are still not "free" yet. If there is no disturbance tomorrow, they can go out in the evening also. Then I will be able to better see which ones will be staying (well, it's not just my decision is it? The hens have "SOME" say in it

Since being on the west coast, I have ordered 6 sweetgrass eggs from Blue Sky, recommended by Porter's (the blue sky link is on Porter's web site, and Porter's says almost all of Blue Sky's birds are Porter's)
The one I am in love with, is the Tiger!
Anyone here that wants very awesome Beltsville (I was told they were MWs) let me know for eggs, pay postage only...OK? )
