Ok Mary, I know you have a nice donkey, and she gets all dolled up for Christmas, but I think you help her a lot. This is my baby, Danica (Danish for Morning Star), and yes, it's my fault she couldn't do better, I didn't leave much out for her to work with!

Beautiful chicks Mary !! For sure 'overachievers', another Icelandic survival trait as I see it, short incubation time in a colder climate. But these poor babies have no leg feathers !

The Fab Feathered 3 are doing great, come arunning when I open the door, not as gentle as my June babies, several of them would jump right to me, and still do when I go out and sit in the pen.

The little guy is a curious and social guy. but, alas and alack he will be going to a pet home, feathered legs and beautiful crest and rose comb not withstanding.

He has some frayed feathers in his tail, and a few here and there other places. He also has a fascinating color pattern developing, but I dont want the frayed gene in the flock, the other two dont show any of them, at least yet.

The other cockeral has very nice size, beautiful leg feathering, and I am guessing he is going to develop some beautiful back and wing coloring although overal he is still snow white. Birgitta has a very nice colored cape developing and barring to set off her crest. Its going to be an interesting winter watching them develop. They will be paired along with several others to see how the feathered gene works out with others as well as doubling up on it.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !

OMG! Tonight, when locking up, I checked the nests. I think I have a broody Wheaten Ameraucana. Yup, she was still on the nest. She was sitting on 2 eggs AND 2 MICE! I am scared to death of mice! Terrible, I know, but I am! Dang, what am I gonna do about mice in the coop? Suggestions anyone?

OMG Kathy! Michael has used those bait traps that they crawl into and eat the bait then wander away and die but I have heard if the chickens get ahold of the dead mice and eat them they can die too. Also the green bait will kill the chickens if it spills out onto the ground. Gosh I am no help but I am definitely creeped out with you!

Hatch update. Seven have hatched. Three blondies, one chipmunk and four black. They are in so much better shape than my last hatch. They are not sticky and are drying and fluffy up soon after they hatch. Too early to tell if any have leg problems but they look good so far. I have four in the brooder already.
