Icelandic Chickens

I had the oddest thing happen. One of my Icelandics hatched with a ruptured yolk sac! The poor thing had dried yolk on it's head and the rest of it is covered in wet yolk. I don't think it will make it but it is sure trying. What a mess. There was only the tiniest bit of blood, all the rest was yolk.

I'm so sorry that happened, poor little chick. I had one too, but it was a duck, and didn't make it. I hope yours does.

Mahonri "some from Peachick" does that mean pea as in peacock?

I hope so! I can hardly wait to hear what his neighbors say about that one.

Darn. Poor thing. Mary, I have had a couple chicks hatch like that, too. If it makes it, it is sure gonna be hungry! Good luck!

Good luck hatchers! I have 14 Icelandics hatching plus two freak egg. (not Icelandic crosses!) One yellow Icelandic is out and six more are pipped. I am hoping to find a local buyer for them. Lukka returned to the flock again today since the mean goat is gone so I am not collecting eggs from the Icelandics for a month again. I found forty rotten eggs laid all in the straw in the goat house today! So I cleaned it out and got it down to bare earth. I dare them to lay there!

I'd love to buy those Icelandic chicks! What's "local" to you? I'm in southern Oregon. Just discovered Icelandics and they're everything I've been wanting in a homestead flock here on my acreage! :))

Over the years, I've had one or two hatch with the yolk broken like that. I had one huge Am today that hatched and bled A LOT! But it dried up and he seems fine.

12 chicks hatched, 11 alive, 4 OE, 7 purebred Ams

3 pipped

10 doing NOTHING..

Oh well, I'll be grateful for what I've been given!

I have 20 out, and I see lots of pips. I should have lots of New Hampshires by morning. They are poppin' like popcorn right now.

4 that are out are from my pen of Olive Eggers.... Lavender Ameraucana rooster over Marans. Lav Ameraucana pullet is in there too (and 2 black Amer. hens). One Lav Ameraucana just hatched.
