Icelandic Chickens

Mary, thanks for asking. The baby is really trying to make it. It stands at the incubator window chirping at me. As you can see it's little head is plastered with yolk so it can't open it's eyes.

It has a large mass protruding from the umbilicus. I ran some warm water over it to loosen the dried yolk so it can move better and open it's eyes. Hopefully I will be able to separate the intestine from the yolk sac after rinsing and maybe try to push the innards back in. Right now it is drying off in the incubator.

OH YES ! ! ! I can spot the Icelandic in that picture!

Gosh, Mary, I sure hope the little guy makes it. You are so sweet to work with it like that. I never do stuff like that, cuz I am cold hearted.

My last 3 pips and 10 unpipped eggs have not moved. In the morning I'll look to see why they quit I suppose.

looks like I'll end with 11 chicks. NOT a good hatch rate... and I did everything the same as last time..., but more shipped eggs this time. Most from my coop hatched, only a couple from San Diego hatched.

Some of this hatch.....

New Hampshires, Delawares, and the others are from my Lavender Ameraucana cockerel's pen (Lav. Ameraucana, Black Ameraucana, Miss Olive, & Marans). Miss Olive's eggs are huge, and her chicks are too! 2 blue and 1 black from her so far.

I love the way you click on these pictures and they get bigger.

Come on little Viking! Nurse Mary is doing her part!
Mary, I bet your little CLB/frizzcoch chicks will be very interesting! Are they going or staying?
Yep, Icelandic chick out of the brooder and exploring already.........it's in their blood, you know?!

Kathy, I love the olive eggers..and the NH...and the BR....and the Ams! I've been tempted by them so many times but I keep telling myself that for every non-Icelandic I have, that's one space that could be filled with an Icelandic......so right now, it's not going to happen. I have four non-Icelandics now...Chickie Mama will be 3 later this month..she has a home for life. My other two SLW hens will be 2 next month. I'd be happy to let them go to someone who wanted them for breeding purposes but they are not big egg producers so someone wanting just laying hens would not be happy with them in the long run. Most likely not going anywhere. The white Java pullet hatched from my Auburn Javas, that I no longer have, is a steady producer of a large light brown egg and now is trying to be broody. She was hatched and raised by Chickie Mama with my first Icelandics last year so I feel would make a great mom (just not right now!). I really like her dark eyes and legs in contrast with her white (albeit a bit sooty )plumage. She'll probably be here unless the friend that got my other Javas needs her. Here's Krystal:

So how many did you set and how many did you end up with?! You are the "Hatching Queen"!!

Mary - I'd leave that alone and let it heal. I've had one heal from a similar issue. I put a band aid over it so the other chicks wouldn't peck at it and kept the area clean since it gets poopy.

Here's a pic:
