Icelandic Chickens

Kathy, I'd love brown right now....we've had a bit of snow the last two nights and it kind of put a damper on my spring fever. I really NEED for spring to get here.....Krystal's brood should be hatching this weekend!!

ALL but one of my Wheaten Ameraucanas has decided to be broody. One has chicks and the others are sitting. I have a hatch due tomorrow. My plan is to stick a few chicks under each one and get them off the eggs. Hope it works.

Sounds like a plan.........but I didn't want a broody....Krystal goes broody....I needed a broody...no broody...

..so eggs in the incubator waiting for someone go broody........why can't they just cooperate!!

I am with Mary, we could use some brown here too, but, its only feb so we are way ahead of 'normal', so I wont complain, this beats sub zero with deep snow which it could well be from past years here.

I am still waiting anxiously to hear on Darons chooks,

one to hear he is okay, and two that mine should be, and three, that he will be able to take on a few more.

I have double looked at mine a number of times and am satisfied that I have selected the smallest combs on the hens I am keeping. It will be the Contessa, black with gold penciled cape, Blue, my self Blue hen, Brigette, a chipmunk that grew into the largest hen with a sweet disposition, and Birgitte a 'sorta wheaten' also large with a tiny RC. All of these are also crested. The roosters are Bjorn, a large black breasted red wing with RC and the largest rooster of his hatch, and the dark chipmunk red breasted feather legged rooster with a large crest. Havent picked a name for him yet, it will be. This will tip me towards dark colors for a year or so but also should give a bit more predator camoflage for the next year or so when free ranging.

Maybe my little flock is getting more selection pressure early on but its moderate, towards traits that I see as having survival value. We shall see. Daron is getting some very nice Icelandics for his part to contribute more genes.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !

3 of Hillbilly Hen's Icelandic chicks had hatched, and lots more on the way! Its 34 degrees here, suppose to be in the 40s! :weee That is warm! Might don't have to wear a sweater! :ya

I set a bunch of Icelandic eggs yesterday. Sadly, they aren't for me (I'm downsizing) but it will be nice to see how they turn out. All the pullets have crests, so I'm hoping all the babies will too. I love crested birds!

Well, the dusting of snow we got last night has melted and it's 45 F right now.....but.......the ten day forecast has one day that doesn't get above freezing...and three others with highs in the 30s.....what was I thinking letting Krystal hatch chicks in February!

I'll try and candle them tomorrow evening and see if all six are still going.
