Icelandic Chickens

Just got caught up with this thread. LOVE all the pics... and that Lukka is SOMETHING ELSE... if she's not raising chicks, she's brooding eggs. Does she ever lay an egg anymore? Born to INCUBATE!!

House seems empty tonight. DS#2, 4 & 5 are on their way north to Flagstaff tonight to go snow boarding tomorrow. I pray they all make it back without broken bones.

I still have the front lawn to mow and the two grow out pens to clean. I will be culling the little deformed pup EARLY tomorrow that was born without a tail or hips. Makes me sad, but I just can't stand to see it suffer and I know it won't have much of a life without being able to walk. The other two are growing like crazy after just four days they are almost three times the size of the crippled pup. DS#5 and I made a pact that know one else in the family will know how it passed.

Hugs Mahonri. So sad.

And Lukka is off the nest. Isi went in the pop door and came out with Lukka! Thanks goodness. I was going to have to hand feed that girl Greek yogurt and bonbons for 21 days otherwise.

I have Isbars and Cream Legbars hatching the 1st, 3rd, and 5th of March. I am so excited about the cream legbars. I won't have to rely on Kelly for sexing them!

Michael put together some cabinets in the sunroom for me today for my chicken supplies. I am going to turn that tall unit into two brooders! The cabinetry is just cheap particle board stuff so I am going to make some slide outs that are more substantial and easier to clean. One will be stacked on top of the other with the made out of hardware cloth for ventilaition. Those cabinets stick out five inches from the wall and there is a wall vent right behind where the brooders will be. I am going to make some fronts out of hardware cloth that I can open and close. During the day the big double doors can be open for light and socialization. At night I will just close the double doors and put a lock on it and the babies should stay safe and warm. No heatlamps, only EcoGlows! I will have four drawers and base cabinets for all my other stuff, like the first aid kit, medicines, poultry dust, mealworms, etc. My incubators will be housed in the cabinet next to the brooders. In cold weather I can even let them run in there. The cabinet backs are just cardboard and I can easily cut vents in it. All the bags of feed are stored in the barn. I have grow out pens in both yards up by the house for when they outgrow the brooders. I should be all set. The bigger one will have the sweeter heater and the smaller one I probably will reserve for broodies. I should be all set. But how many times have I said that?

X2 Mahonri!

Yeah, but for how long?

She didn't do very well with the two "hitchhiker" chicks.....the CLBs will just make it easier for her to chose pullets!

The new room is looking great! Everything will be convienent and easy to clean. My DH will see me rearranging/modifying something in the coop/barn and will say, "I thought you were done building coops/nestboxes/doors/whatever?" and I just say, "I was when I said that, but now I'm not! Things change and I need to change things!"
