Icelandic Chickens

Just the membrane. Let it dry then cut out an area at least an inch square were there had been blood. Put that in a small zip lock bag and attach it to the lab form for that emu. Leg band them or do something to identify them. I just used the "Egg B" name. Go to Zoogen's site here:

http://zoogendna.com/Sex_Made_Easy__TM_.html

Choose either a worddoc or PDF form. Print it out and fill it in. Staple the sample for each emu to their own requisition (I also wrote "Egg B"
on the ziplock bag) Send it in. I was anxious so I sent it in an overnight flat rate envelope. It goes to a post office box in Davis, CA. The lab owner picks up the mail on her way in each morning. You should have results 24 hours after they receive the sample. Write your phone number down in big letters if you want them to call or write down your email address and ask to be notified that way. A week or so after you get the initial report you will get a nice certificate in the mail. That should be signed over to the new owner should you ever decided to sell them.

Keep what membrane you have left in case they need more sample. That only happened to me on one's I feather sexed.

Good luck!

I went out to the barn/coop to do some cleaning and picture taking of the 5 two week olds so Kelly can tell me how many are boys.......I hear chicks peeping like they are not happy.....look in on Krystal and her chicks, it's not them...look in and see Duva is off the nest and on the floor "talking" to them....I don't know if she was just off the nest for a break or if she was trying to get them to jump from the nest to the floor (about 2 1/2 feet from the floor). I took this picture and then decided to move Krystal and her chicks to the outdoor pen and move Duva and her chicks into the broody coop. The picture tells the story........3 chicks......3 non-hatchers...one of which was the Isbar. I took the egg shells out before I took the pic and when I went to move Krystal, Duva got back on the nest. I got Krystal settled and then moved Duva (flower pot and all) to the other coop. After doing other chores, I went and got the flashlight so I could look at the eggs closer. No movement inside and I could see "sloshing" in the Isbar egg. Eggtopsy on the Isbar showed a very small chick, lots of liquid, had to have quit last week sometime. Icelandics, one never absorbed the yolk but looked close to full-term, the other egg's shell was very hard, I had a hard time cracking it. It held a large full term chick, yolk absorbed. I'm thinking it couldn't get the shell pipped. Sad.
Good news is three beautiful chicks! These are Dreki's first chicks.................
