Icelandic Chickens

Welcome Icelander !

Welcome to the thread and thanks for sharing your flock with us.

When you can I'd like to hear more about your importing and how you did the permits etc, this is something that we need more of.

Enjoy !

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !

Gorgeous birds! Welcome!
Howdy, I come here by way of the FB group that was discussing the "frey" issue. I am in Western Washington and am new to raising chickens although I grew up around them. I'm Icelandic so I really wanted to have Icelandic chickens and right now I have 9 gorgeous young Icelandics that were hatched from fertile eggs imported directly from a breeder in Iceland. So far, I have received two batches of eggs. My first import was not very successful, I got one chick out of 8 eggs--all the eggs were fertile and had chicks develop in them, but we had a power failure in the last week and development dropped off in all but the one egg but one, a roo named Prímus, but he turned out beautifully. My second import was 10 eggs and I got 8 chicks from that hatch, born on Christmas day. Unfortunately, 6 of my 9 chickens are roos and I can't keep more than one or two so 4 will be getting rehomed shortly. At this time I am planning on breeding my three hens with two roosters to keep up the diversity. It's really exciting that so many people are owners and breeders of Icelandics, I can't believe how many posts there are on this thread! Anyway, here is a pic I took of my babies a couple of weeks ago:

Hi folks .. I'm new to this forum, and to Icelandics (although I've been lurking for a bit). I've just started with Icees, having gotten chicks from Mary (hi Mary!) last month. They're now a little over a month old and I had one with the apparent weird feathering (?fray) issue .. here are some pics of the chick (it's now been euthanized, didn't want it suffering):

"Look ma, barely any feathers!"

It's was much smaller than the others, and barely had any feathers.

Here are a coupla group shots of them chowing down on kefir mash (aka chicken crack!) .. the rest are doing great and growing like weeds .. nice color variations, huh!

I sure hope we as a group can get this issue figured out. Hoping my contribution to the discussion can help achieve that.

Happy to be amongst yall ....

Good morning all, welcome Icelander. Nice birds.

Finally a break in the rain. I cannot believe the condition of the coops and runs after the drenching we have gotten. Everything is so disgusting. The jail coop leaked bigtime so it is the worst mess. MY right leg gave out again yesterday so I am back to using the cane. Gonna be hard to clean the coops and shelters this way but it has to be done. I will wait until the first dry day which isn't until sometime next week.

I am taking St. Patrick's dinner to my parents today. I put the corned beef in the crockpot overnight, Irish soda bread is in the oven, Baileys Irish cream cupcakes are ready, and I am starting the colcannon. My parents eat supper at about 1:00 p.m. so I had to get going early. Michael and I will enjoy ours at dinner time after a short trip to visit his granddaughter. I'll set my eggs for the Easter hatch before we head over to my Mom and Dad's.

Hi Ig, I am sorry you had to euthanize the baby but it was best. It was definitely the worst I have seen. The rest of your flock looks fabulous!

Mary

Well, my Icelandic buyer hasn't contacted me, so I think I shall be setting some eggs for the Easter hatch after all - and ICEES!

Sorry about your leg Mary... Glad you'll get to have some family time for St. Patty's.
Last hatch, I had one that looked like the little one without feathers. It didn't make it.
