Icelandic Chickens

Sorry for the delay- Hatch Update!

On Christmas Day I woke up to 2 dark icelandics (black almost). I now have 4 iclelandic babies- hopefully not all boys, lol. They are my tiniest chick and pick on all the bigger babies- too funny.

Will take pics and post later.

You could name them Joy and Noel for now then you have the option of changing them to Joe and Nole (the French version of Noel) later!

Cheryl, a couple who lives down the street from me just stopped by to pet the donkeys and I went out to introduce myself. They have chickens that free range in the afternoons and they have not lost any to hawks. She said a hawk sits on the telephone wire and watches but has never taken one. They even had silkies! As we were visiting, a group of four redtails were flying overhead all around us and into the tress in a mating ritual. They got to see Isi in action and said they think we will be ok. I hope so!

I gotta' go work on the Martha Stewart Roll-Out Nest boxes!

That's certainly good news!

Good progress on the new coop and brooder/incubator room! Today I covered the wall between the two rooms with 1/4 inch hardward cloth.

Then I worked on the Opa/Martha Stewart Bookcase Rear Roll-out Nest Box Complex. This is a view from the back side. I still have to make the frames around the part where the eggs roll out. I didn't have room to make them as long as Opa suggested because it would have interfered with entering and exiting the barn side. We tested these with our largest eggs and they roll just fine. I don't have any egg eaters right now so hopefully this will work.

This is from the chicken side. I still Have to put in the nest pads, perches, and paint it all to match. I am also going to hang some slit plastic at the back of the boxes so they can't see the eggs.

Hubby had encouraged me to order one of the 10 hole units online but I just couldn't justify the cost. With shipping it came to $425.00 and it had to be assembled, with a rivet gun no less. A stroll around Home Depot and about $100.00 in materials and I think I have one that will work just as well, plus it fits in the space I have! I can't wait to see it in action!

Will post more pics after I finish.

On another note a beautiful fog bank rolled in as we finished in the barn tonight. It was breathtaking!
