Icelandic Chickens

The Icelandics are free! The Icelandics are free!

I just took down a section of fence and let them go. I am a nervous wreck.

Where did they ultimately end up? Trying to get back into the small covered yard they came from!

I know, I know .... I would be worried, too... BUT, think how happy they are! They are just gonna LOVE it! Watch them run around and fly around, OHHHHHH, it is all a good thing!

Project Freedom complete ..... good job, Mary!

Mary, You may have your work cut out for you this evening..........they may try to fly up on the open coop covering to gain access to their old digs. My Javas kept coming back to the other chickens, even when they had plenty of other cool places to go, when I moved their mobile coop away and tried to get them to free range another part of the yard. Same coop they had been in for three months, just relocated away from the others.

I got tired of wrangling them and moved the mobile coop back over by the others. I hope your Icelandics are better behaved than my juvie javas were!

I know they will love all the freedom........maybe they are just trying to "break-out" the rest of the inmates!!!

I think we are ok. It is really cold here today and all but four of the 35 birds are back in the coop, most of them up on the roosts already. We'll see. They could all coming running back out at dark.

Yay, maybe the Icelandics know that the new coop has higher roosts, and a cool feeder, and roll-out nest boxes, and more space, and "freeeedddommmm" (said with the Mel Gibson/William Wallace voice)!

How exciting Kathy. Post pics.

I am a little despondent over here. Second day of free range and one of the neighbors free roaming Jack Russell terriers got into my yard thru the 4' horse fence. The stupid owner was walking them. I tried to talk to him about it and a horrible scene ensued with him yelling and telling me he is going to report us to the county for code violations. The things he sited are lies, like we "have someone living in our motor home," etc. Total lies. It was awful. I felt like it was going to come to blows.

I just politely told him that his dogs are coming in my yard and trying to push in the gate to the chickens. He said "no way my dogs wouldn't come this far." I reiterated that they absolutely do and he again claimed they don't. Mind you, he was on my property at the time and two of the dogs were trying the gate and the other one was crapping under my propane tank! So I told him I was advised by Animal Control to take pictures of any strays on my property and that I had pictures is he would like to see them. That is when he started screaming and threatening me. I fully expect a visit from the county code enforcement officer any day. I tried to call Animal Control to tell them what happened when I tried resolving the issue in the manner they suggested. Guess what, they only work Tuesday thru Friday!

No chickens were lost today but had I not ben out there, you can bet there would have been many. When his dog was on my property after squeezing thru my fence, he kept yelling at me that my donkeys better not hurt it! Freaking idiot. I am so upset tonight.

I'm sorry about your neighbor....that really is a sucky situation. Our neighbors dogs killed 4 of my chickens a few years ago. I was told by the game warden that If a dog is after my livestock I can shoot if I need to. I wasn't about to do that, because I couldn't imagine living next to someone if I had harmed their dog.

It really is a sticky situation....you want to be a good neighbor but you want the neighbor to do the same and keep their dogs under control.....ughhh. I don't have any good advice for you, but I am hoping that something happens to make it better.

Mary, I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I'm glad to hear none of the chickens were harmed and hope this will be the last time his dogs trespass.
