Icelandic Chickens

Bob's Henhouse :

Mahonri, sorry to hear about the chipmunk. That's our favorite coloring of chicks.
It looks like the next one out is going to be black. Can't tell on the one after that yet.

Ohhhhh, now you have me all excited waiting for that one to hatch! I wanna see if it will be like my Oreo chicks. I am hoping they will end up mottled .... just cuz I have never had a mottled one!

Mary, hope your neighbors dog has an 'electrifying' experience soon. Do you think stringing wires on the fence would keep him out? The gaul of that guy asking if your mule will hurt his dog on YOUR property. Have they closed a mental institution in your area?

Hubby bought a 150' roll of field fencing, 2x4 inch openings. We are going to put that up over the existing fence for now. That will hopefully keep them out of the free range pasture but they can still get into my henhouse yard if I accidentally leave the gate unlatched. I always try to be very careful but hubby, not so much.

No mental institutions here to close. Governor turned them out on the streets years ago!

Mary, pretty rooster.

The next 2 chicks are a yellow, and a dark brown to black. I'll take a pic after they fluff up a bit. One of the 3 remaining eggs is pipped, but they weren't due till tomorrow, so like you said, they like to show up to the party early.

I'd be shooting first and discerning intentions later Mary. There are dogs running around here still. When I hear the roos alert I grab the .22 and keep an eye on the dog to see if they are interested in chickens. Fortunately for them, they have shown no interest. Today was the first day I let everybody run free when I wasn't home. I let the extra 26 roosters out too hoping if something came after anyone they'd jump in and try and protect them. No casualties to report, but I was very nervous all day.

What did he look like as a chick? I have 4 "Oreo," chicks now. I can hardly wait to see what they are gonna look like. It is so fun watching them grow from chick down to feathers.
