Icelandic Chickens

She has 3 of her own eggs under her. The broody with Icee eggs under is due to hatch next Friday

that is a pic of my father when he was a boy. His birthday was on the 9th of March. Every year since he passed I have changed any of my avatars/profile pics to ones of him. I like this one because there isn't anything better than a boy and his dog! Also, he is standing next to a backyard coop

. When the month ends I will go back to my own pics.

What a great way to keep good memories with you - that is just awesome!

Today is the day that we lost my Father in Law. He went through the ice with his snowmobile 3 years ago. I miss him terribly, like he was my own father. Memories cannot be taken away, thank goodness!

Thanks Mary! Yes you can love someone like crazy....but until they are gonna, you don't realize how much you appreciate them for who they were. I think dad would have loved the raising and showing of chickens. Everything he did, he was super focused from beginning to completion.

sorry to hear about your FIL. I would have been devastated too.

Thank you, Brad. Deb, those are perfect! And

to all those missing loved ones.

Still nothing under my broody. I peeked after work and even gently lifted and checked several of the eggs. No pips. No noise. I am beginning to think more and more that they really did die. I hope not. Those two from Flekka were sure wiggling a lot when I candled several days ago

Tonight was the beginning of day 22. I guess it wouldn't be quite so hard to deal with, if Flekka were still laying. I do believe she is on strike. Dang it.

One of the local BYC'ers to where I am likes to come over sometimes to see my chickens. He's very sweet, about 12 or 13 or so. I didn't know it until last night, but he stuffed several extra eggs from the Icelandics under my broody when I wasn't around

That sure explains why she magically had eight eggs, instead of five! No idea if they are any good or not, nor do I have a guarantee that they are purebred Icelandic..............those girls keep sneaking into the coop where that dopey BR cockerel is at night. It doesn't help that my family keeps letting the Icees out to play during the day, either. Oh, sigh................

I couldn't wait any longer. I woke up and went out in the garage to candle that broody's eggs while it was still dark. I found one with a live chick inside! And it had pipped the air cell! It was chirping and moving when I had the light on it. COME ON, BABY!!! Both your mama's need a baby!!

I couldn't find the other two that had developed a good ways, though, so I don't know what's going on out there. Found three more that are developing blood veins very nicely. Waiting through today to see if I have a chick is going to be so hard!

for you and the Icee chick. I saved looking under the OE till after all the chicken chores were done this morning....2 chicks under her and the 3rd egg had quit within the last couple days or so. but still....2 chicks! this was the first time using a broody hen.

love that i didn't have anything to do except sit on my hands and wait for them to hatch.

Yay, for chicks!! If you think hatching them with a broody is great, waiting until you watch the hen raising them.......the best entertainment out there
