Icelandic Chickens

Well, I had 2 make it to lockdown, but the Sportsman spiked at 112 overnight and I lost close to 300 eggs...so no Icelandics for me. Perhaps I don't need another breed after all? *sigh* I did have a miracle of a couple that look like they survived, both Lemon Cuckoo Orps.

Happy Easter, everyone!

Eek! I'm sorry

How in the world did that happen?

Anyone want some good news? My icelandics that arrived with so many detached air cells are fixing themselves! I had it down that 14 or 15 out of 18 were damaged and now only 2 appear to be moving! They are moving just in the top of the egg so that's progress. Still going to hand turn them so I know they are being carefully handled but that made my night! Yay!

Yay for good news! I have just a little to add, too. Our power was out at 4:00 am today, but I woke up right before it happened, and my brother is a night owl ........ So, we were able to get some bottles of hot water into the incubator and cover it so that it stayed warm enough in there until the power was back on. The eggs should all be okay. I checked the one I have from Flekka (the one I'm not sure is purebred) and that little baby was still moving. It's sure active!

Yes, good news is soooo much better! Shawn is going to hatch some for me in the Cinco de Mayo Hatchathon, so I'll get some after all. We have a very wild and wacky wonky crowd for that this year, so that is sure to be a fun time.

For those who asked, I have an ancient Sportsman and the thermostats are on pegs out the side, which are threaded right-angle screws with wing-nuts. I have mine up on a base and next to my basement stairs. When going past, I bumped it. It shouldn't have done anything at all, but because it's sooooooooo old, older than me, the threads are next to nothing on the mechanism and it poped in several threads-worth, pushing my upper-limit wafer to 112. So it basically bounced back and forth between 98.5 and 112 for 1 hours.

This shows the low of 91* from me opening it and leaving it open for a half-hour. Heart-stopping!!!

Anyway, I have a ton of eggs in there that are about a week old now, and I'll candle to see if any of them survived. I did have 3 chicks make it...out of like 130.

That will never happen again!!!

Yeesh!!

Chooks Chicks, I have an old sportsman too and had horrible hatch results my first time around because of temperature :(
speaking of temperature problems... sorta.. in my Styrofoam bator i have two thermometers, one used for two hatches and one brand new. One is showing perfect temperature, but one is 1.5 degree's higher.. humidity is the same. Any reason to account for this, I had the one right under the heater so i thought that was the problem, but when i moved it to the back of the incubator it showed the same temperature... talk about frustrating! I don't know which one to believe.
