Icelandic Chickens

Very nice looking group Laurie!

Which ones to keep is always very, very difficult for me.....I try to think like a Viking......I know they must have kept certain ones for utility but I bet they also kept some just because they liked the way they looked

and some become special favorites for some reason, so those stay around unless I know I have "the perfect home" for them.

Why are Icelandics always so gorgeous?

Coldupnorth, love the pictures! I am so excited to see how this little one from your stock turns out. He's sure a cute little thing. He's like a chocolate dot next to the big Wyandotte that hatched him

I so wish I could take one of those cockerels for you

Both of my roos got some frostbite on their combs this past winter, but they both have HUGE combs. One is a RC, the other is SC. You wouldn't even know now that they had frostbite, except that some of the very tips of the points on their combs have fallen off.

Unfortunately right now all of my roosters have big single combs, that is the one trait that I need to get away from, RC and small is the need. Its just too cold here for SCs. Frostbite they dont need.

ALL Icelandic chicks are cute, just loaded with it !

Some of my 4-5 month old Icelandics that are growing out in a pen next to their parents. Still am loving the different color combinations that show up with them. Neither of the very definite roos look like their father. How does one decide who they want to keep?

Taken before the girls decided to abandon the boys

Kinda blurry, but not all of them are single comb. Black one is one of NotAFarms. Though even with this past extremely cold winter, you can't even tell my main roo had any frostbite and he's got a big comb. So maybe Icelandics are better at protecting their combs in the cold than other SC breeds.

Two of the brothers (dad is peeking through the pen next to them)

Such pretty boys! I can't wait until mine grow up.

Thats a beautiful rainbow of colors Kari, gotta love them !!

My Icelandic SCs are thicker then I remember other SCs to have been, but they still get frostbite, so far only the tips. Isi has a thicker comb now then he had. So it could well be there has been some survival conditioning to them. He has a forever home whatever. I do want to get the RC in them though. That needs to be.

Re the pens the young guys are in, looks good, can you send a bigger look at them? I like what I see.

Beautiful colors!

I don't have Icelandic roosters, but temperament is up there as well as looks when I'm selecting a rooster to keep.

Agreed on the temperament thing! Of the two roos I have now, I would keep my RC boy over my SC boy, if push came to shove. My RC can be carried around and petted and not freak out. Definitely my favorite.

For the life of me, I cannot come up with a name I like for this chocolate Icee chick. I keep looking up words in Icelandic, but they either don't fit or are too long. Usually when I name animals, there are certain names that just feel "right". Does anyone have suggestions for a name? I know that traditionally, Icelandics (the people) will name their birds after thing that the chickens remind them of, such as "small one" or "caller".

I have tried everything from dramatic words like 'volcano' or 'lava' to more random ones like 'green' or 'speedy'. Seriously, if there is an Icelandic word for penguin, at this point I may just do that. This is driving me crazy. Oi........

It's not Icelandic, but the first thing that came to mind was donner (thunder).

Years ago when I couldnt think of a name for a rooster it just became Bob. It worked, but once I had half a dozen Bobs roaming around, those were Wyandottes. It worked, for awhile.

There are lots of saga names, plus the Norse mythologies. Have you checked into some of the online translators? I doubt you'll come up with a northern version of Chocolate. Hows his personality?

My youngsters of this years hatch are all very personable, so are the Iowa Blues. The Icelandics are all of the Isi line, too many keepers

Isi can be carried around, takes treats from the hand, couldnt have a better temperament. He is the model Flock Meister, watchs out for the girls, calls warnings, meets threats and calls them to foods he finds. I have seen him tackle a good sized garter snake, one of the largest I ever saw here. I let one of the cats take it from him. So he is also one of my smaller dragon slayers. The male cat is the main one, Sir Guy.

Life is good, and better with Icelandics !
