Icelandic Chickens

Thoughts on these sweeties?

They are still young, but greatest personalities. My husband is hoping the top and bottom one are hens, 'cause they are so friendly. I told him if he wants to breed Icelandics, that becomes HIS project! :)

Top one is a girl, second is a boy. I think the third is a girl, though I must say I've never seen one that color. Pretty teens

Rairai, congrats on the egg! Keep an eye on them Icelandics - mine usually go on strike for a week, then start laying again and hide their nests somewhere while I think they're still out of action. I'll find one or two dozen eggs stashed in a bush. They're sneaky!

Crystaldegallina, you have some lovely birds

Pretty fluffs.

Put eight Icee eggs under my most recent broody last night. She's a big girl, so she can cover them all, thank goodness. Seven more eggs are in a friend's trusty incubator. I'm not obsessed.........................*cough*.

  • crystaldegallina Thanks for the pics. It never ceases to amaze me the diverse genetics within this breed. It drives some of the show people mad, but I love it.
  • RedII - thank you. I'm very excited that those 2 are girls, except now my husband wants to breed them instead of freezer camp. LOL, I had hoped to find a local new home. The 2nd pullet I think would be twin to the cockerel if not for the sex differences. If you see them next to each other 'in person' it's pretty striking. Whereas the other looked so much like a pair of Rhodebars that are 4 wks younger, that the only reason I could tell them apart is the age, and she has sleeker feathering.
:) They are the sweetest things. Only chickens other than my orphan banty cross that will fly up to my shoulder to say hello.

Update from the friend who has some in her incubator: 5/7 have good air cells now, with only two loose air cells! Yay! I'm not going to check the eggs under my broody again for a few days. I have high hopes to see some veining action.

AletaG, the diversity in the Icelandic breed is one of the main things that drew me to them, initially. I love seeing the explosion of colors and feathering that can come from a single pair! Once I got to researching them, I totally fell in love.

Rairai, Greta is a pretty girl! I love her white bum.

Forsaela with her 10 learning what canned whole kernel corn is....number 10 barely got its bum into the frame (far left)...

They are so much fun to watch......
