Icelandic Chickens

My only problem now is the 80ish chicks I've brought home from the hatch over the 3 week run of the fair.

What to do, what to do...........
Oh my. That's a lot of chicks!

Yes, they wanted to have 4-5 chicks hatch per day, so I set 7 eggs per day for 19 days. The hatch went pretty well, despite having non-chicken people monitor the incubators and move eggs into the hatchers about half of the days.

What kind of chicks are they ? Icelandic?

We are having late monsoon weather here in Northern MI, just finished a wet week and another one here now, record rains for us in July, also too cold, nights below 60, the tomatoes wont set fruit.

Life goes on, the youngsters in the outdoor brooder and the growout pen are doing well.

Looking at the youngsters closely and I am thinking that I am going to need to do another incubating, it seems like almost 3/4s of this years crop are cockerals. Not good, I will know a lot better in a couple of weeks. It could be an August hatch coming up.

Jake, Of my earlier hatches, I had 7 cockerels and 4 pullets. The 6 week-olds, 5 cockerels and 2 pullets (one is still questionable but still would be 4 Ks and 3 Ps if it ends up a pullet). This last group of 10 is too young to tell....but there a some that are showing their attitude already!

Maybe its the weather ! But the incubator was in a 75 degree room each time.

I wanted more pullets then this so I may set a hatch in a week or ten days, might as well, can only wind up with more cockerals . As it stands I am planning on the chicken house building in Sept, so have room for quite a few more. So I might as well. Isi is back with his girls so can wind up with a few more of his daughters, thats not at all bad.

Deb, it is a good thing I'm not your neighbor. I would so be in trouble with all of those tempting little chicks running around

Good luck finding homes for them!

I just candled 7/8 eggs under my broody (couldn't find the eighth one under Ms. Super-fluff) I see at least four embryos! I ended up with some really weird air cells, but at least they are stable now. I've only got one loose air cell, which isn't developing. I'm not going to candle them again. I'm just going to let my broody do her thing, and anyway, it's easier to lose track of time that way and have the next two weeks fly by.

I think I have a name for my little chocolate baby. I really like the name Eik, even though it's a feminine name. I've found out that there's a chance this baby could have been an oops, in that it could be another breed that got shipped with the Icelandic eggs by accident. I will be watching it closely, but it still makes me happy. The truth lies in the feathers!

I am going to set some eggs next Tuesday, and probably a few more on Friday, just to be safe on having the pullets I want.

Deb I wish I could take some of those Iowa Blues off your hands, again, I had just a few so will be looking for a few more this fall. Do wish that you were closer.

Right now we are heading for a record cool, and wet July here, Over a foot of rain, so far for July.

Life goes on.
