Icelandic Chickens

Thanks Mary! I think he's quite stunning too!

His father is Fridrick

And I think this is his mother Maeja, since she is my only rosecomb hen and she is also the only mottled hen in there. She was laying eggs at the time that I hatched them, which is unusual because she is broody all the time!

I love Maeja! She looks like my Anna except she is buff/wheaton where Anne is black....but the mottling, tail set, gold in the hackle and amount of white in her wings and tail are very, very similar. I don't have anybody here that has the gorgeous blonde hackle and saddle feathers like Fridrick. He is very handsome!
Keep up the great work!!

Eeeee! So pretty! I didn't realize that you had more than one white hen/pullet in your flock, Laurie. I wonder if Fridrick was the sire to my cockeral, Ike. He has beautiful gold saddle feathers just starting to peek through on his back.

I have just the one white hen (Svana) and the other four pullets are offspring of Fridrick and Svana. Fridrick is my only Icelandic rooster that I've collected and sent eggs from, so he should be the sire to your cockerel. I love how your cockerel is feathering out. He is going to be beautiful!

We are still working on setting up at our new place. It has required a lot of work! Our horses are settled in just fine, but the chicken run and coop are not quite ready.

I cleaned out the coop and run from the former owner's meat birds. Yuck! We put up the roost. We took a salvaged bookcase and made a set of nest boxes. I built a pop door. We've made some repairs.

And then there's the electric. This old farmstead's barns were never properly wired to begin with, and one barn previously suffered a fire. The wiring has been a challenge, but DH has made substantial progress. I am hoping that we will be ready soon for our chickens.

I have been going through chicken withdrawal. We gave away our orpingtons before our move, and it has been months since I have had fresh eggs. I am really looking forward to getting the Icelandics!!!

One of my pullets from Mary is much like her. Just beautiful. I also have a loud mottled grandson of Isi that is a dark mottled guy. Very striking. He is the only one of this years crop I am going to grow out. Unfortunately he has a single comb.

I am spending quite a bit of time looking at the new hatches from Marys eggs, looking for crests and combs, but too soom, one has a bit of wisp on top, and the largest MAY have a thicker line where the combs will be. But I am thinking I will have to just wait a couple more weeks, two of them have absolutely nothing there, the other two are maybes.

Mary I havent ordered the camera yet, mea culpa.

I will sometime, someday, when I grow up. Its all a definite maybe, or maybe not, not sure yet but its for sure definite, maybe. I think.

Oh, Jake, what am I going to do with you?!

I got some pictures of the full siblings to your chicks. They are about two weeks older than yours. Definitely only two rose combs among the seven of them and some look to be crested and some are showing a possible crest. I'm thinking I may have quite a few cockerels among the group......I'm sure Kelly will be around to let me know.....

Okay, off to switch to Chrome to add pictures..........

Elska with her three enjoying a late season watermelon compliments of my friend who kept them "tented" so they could finish...

Closer shot of their heads.... you can see the light one and dark one have crests.....the medium one, no crest....
Dark one has the only rosecomb among these.
I am always amazed how much they looked alike at one day old and how different they end up.

Heidi with her four....

Close-ups of some of hers....
The only rosecomb....possible crest coming in......but hint of wattles and pink....

Single comb, note the wattles starting to show already.........

.....does have that hint of red on the top of its head....

Dark single comb........

I don't have an individual pic of the fourth one but it has a single comb....and looks very similar to the middle chick.
