Icelandic Chickens

Hello everyone, I just wanted to give results of my first hatch. 7 hatched. I'm very happy. I got these from Andy and these are from the Behl line. I had to rescue one from the shell because it was shrink wrapped.

Great, then you are almost there. They are usually a bit on the early side, but if they aren't just be patient.

Thanks! Just a few more days. It's nice when you're busy cause you have less time to think about the hatch.

Congrats on your hatch!

Congrats, Sporteltx! They look great! I wouldn't be surprised if that little gold one turns out mottled. It looks similar to my Flekka when she was young.

Ace, I'm excited for you!

I think Moose is lovely <3 If we're talking dream dogs, I gotta be honest - I love the Irish wolf hounds and flat-coat retrievers. My fiance wants to get a blue heeler at some point, or possibly some other working dog.

What did the incubation day count turn out to be? Mine are rarely past 20 days and most are at 19 , for me.

I am thinking that this is a breed characteristic, a survival trait in a colder climate with hen brooding.

Also the vigor of the new hatches, up and running is also a survival trait. To get the blood flowing and crops filled. Survival of the fittest over a 1,000 years does have its influence. Whats not to love?

If, I dont get my Icelandic Sheepdog I would lean towards the Irish Wolfhound, it would need its own bunk in the RV. I do have hopes though for the Icelandic pup.

I found one of my Icelandic Roosters dead this morning. I'm not certain what happened. Seemed ok during the day. He had suffered some frostbite during the arctic blast, but we were mid 40's yesterday and 20's last night. I didn't see any external injuries. I do have a son from him and one hen.Everyone else appears ok right now.

Ugh, sorry to hear this. I hope you don't lose any more.

My vitamin-deficient cockerel is continuing to have problems with his legs. He'll be fine one moment, then sitting down in a weird way the next. I am hesitant to use him for breeding if this is a continuous problem, because while I love his coloration, I don't want to pass on something that the whole breed doesn't have. So, he may end up just being a special needs pet for a while, or else dinner when he's big enough, sadly.
