Icelandic Chickens

Thanks Laurie and Mike!

Yes, that patch of bare ground is right under and around the base of a hickory tree........and other than the drive and walk-ways that have been shoveled, is one of the few spots around the barn without snow. It looks like our "warm-up" is over. The forecast today and tomorrow is for daytime highs in the 20s but then they drop to highs in the teens for Tue-Fri, then back to the 20s for the rest of the ten days.........no more thawing here for awhile.....

Congrats on the chicks ace, "Any idea of possible colors on these two?"

Yeah, any color is possible! See the two full sisters above as examples of the variety possible from a single set of Icelandics.

Okay, got a few pics today. Not everyone was out and about when I got around to going out with the camera.

Eldur with the New Hampshires:

A frontal shot of him:

Close up of his comb to show the frostbite damage from our brutal winter:

Elska and two of the Fjola x Falki pullets (siblings to the ones Jake hatched from the eggs I brought him)....dark one is Gunnar and light one is Gula (that is Anna's rump on the left):

Glora (Forsaela x Falki pullet and full sister to the four pullets and one cockerel I brought to Jake):
Mary these look great !

One of the cockerals from the eggs that you brought up is colored very much like ELDUR, only he is Rose Combed so he is a keeper for sure. He is with a hatch mate pullet that is my self made pet, she is the one that literally jumps to my hands when I open the pen door. Of the pullets that you brought up one is also very much like Glora. Each of those pullets is laying well, nice big mediums every day.

What is the Icelandic translation of Eldur? I have a big dark Isi son with very similar comb damage. which is why I will use only RC roosters from now on. I wont cull any single comb hens, but will keep only RC roosters.

Winter is back after a couple nice days and will be here strongly through and into March. The chicken pens are about walled in with snow with a hallway down to them. Life goes on !

Jake, Eldur means fire. He is a son of Elska so I wanted an "E" name for him and that was the one I liked. He has a "flame" of red feathers for his crest that is a bit noticeable in the pic above. He didn't have any problems with his comb last year as a cockerel, but this winter has been especially brutal. Once his comb heals, I figure he will not be bothered by frostbite again since the fine points will be gone. I love the look of the single combs on the cocks but they aren't the best choice for here. I try to keep some of both........right now I have two Forsaela X Falki sons, one with a rose comb and one with a single comb, and am trying to determine which will stay. I like the coloring on the single comb cockerel better but........

Edited to add this close-up of the "flame"

Ha. That's what I've read! I was hoping that there was a generality for chicks that had eyeliner, etc... But I have 4 little ones! Pics to come...!

He is a beauty Mary. Is he the 'sire' on the eggs that you brought up?

If so Elderssun seems like a good name for this cockeral. He doesnt have the flame, lots of black with larger white spots. His temperament is also excellent, I can hold him also, no problems at all, he also settles right into the hands.

These two are going to be the core of a flock, with one of Isi's straight comb pullets.

I will have at least a trio of a starter flock available for anyone in MI interested, no charge on them. The rooster I have in mind is a dark grandson of Isi by his son Bjorn a very dark, and larger then his sire rooster. He is a nice tempered rooster but not a pet, his son though is very calm and even tempered, I think will be an excellent flockmeister. Bjorn was free ranging much of the winter just because he was doing so well but alas the cold got to his comb and froze the points off so he is now in his own pen and coming on well.He is larger then his sire Isi, and the first in the morning to greet the new day.

I will also have one or two of the 2013 hatch roosters available. But no pullets to go with them.

Could well have some spring hatch ones though to go with them. These will all be carrying if not showing Rose Combs and Crests as both of my breeding roosters this year are Crested Rose Combs.

Falki and Fjola are now living farther south in Illinois with Myrth. I haven't heard from her since the end of November so I hope all is well with Falki, Fjola, Eik and Egla.
I have always liked the head shot of Falki. He looks like he is wearing a crown and has flowing locks of gold and red hair.......truly regal.
