Anna has a chick!! I'm not sure if there is more than one but there was a peep when I checked before lock-up tonight. I gently lifted her and saw two halves of a shell, which I grabbed. I felt the chick and picked it up. What a cutie! The shell had a "G" on it. It was an egg that I took out of a nest after I saw Glima cackling and leaving so I marked it with a G. She is blue and the chick looks like Elska did when she was hatched.....could the first chick hatched be a pullet?......chances are NO........from my experience with my flock, first hatches are males.......

......but we will see.........
I tried to look under the other two, but didn't want to upset them since they are both first time broodies. Gaela is making "momma talk" after her dinosaur roar but I didn't see or hear anything to make me think she had a chick. I'm worried that when I left for Kentucky and let the DH tilt the LG that maybe the fluctuating temps may have messed up this hatch.

One chick out is good! I have one out also, with one other pip. If your eggs are from your own flock, you can get more, and the girls will go broody again. Of course it is still early, so plenty of time more.

A little of both here. I've got turkey eggs in the incubator right now, but no Icelandics. Every time I pen my girls, they throw a fit and my white egg supply dries up. Boo. Love the pictures, Mary. Eldur is a handsome chap! I am up to no good today. Trying to think of how to persuade DH to let me get ducks at some point, hehe. Probably won't happen soon, but oh well.

I was late out to the coop today because of our early church service and a potluck brunch afterwards. I checked the broodies. Anna was off her nest with 6 chicks, I took the other four eggs and put them under Gaela who doesn't have any chicks yet. Gola was still on her nest and has 2 chicks so far and six eggs still intact. When I candled the eggs at 14 days, there was quite a bit of variability in development. I blame it on the still air LG not being consistent in temp throughout and the temp difference between sides when the incubator was tilted side to side while I was gone. I hope Gaela gets at least one chick to hatch out of the group she has. Pictures forthcoming!!

I just got in from locking up the coop. I took the eggs from under Gola. One chick had pipped but never zipped. It was dead in the shell. All the rest were quitters of a variety of stages. I decided to check Gaela's too. I pulled five eggs from under her and all were quitters. The sixth egg had a pip! I quickly replaced it and grabbed the other eggs. Only one other egg was still alive. I left the two with her. I sure hope they both make it! Gaela and Gola are both daughters of Forsaela x Falki. A third daughter of theirs, Glora, is now broody and is sitting on two of her own eggs.

Here are Gola's chicks...very difficult to get clear pics of them!

Wow, this is a long thread. I must say that I'm wanting to get some of these Icelandics. I have the space cleared for a coop and run and plan on having it complete by the end of July. I have plenty of ground and a pine thicket as well. I'm located in West Virginia. I'm even willing to travel a bit to pick them up if I have to. I really enjoy this site and this thread. Have a good evening.
