Icelandic Chickens

Here are examples of my three weeks olds. They are at that ugly stage, losing their down for big chicken feathers. Here are a dark and a light. I have more of the light ones than dark. I am anxious to see how many blues I get out of this group. They are from a very diversely colored flock.

Hello everyone, I have been lurking around on this thread since it started, but haven't had anything to contribute until today. As some may know, my entry was selected as the winner for the Icelandic Egg Contest. I can't express how grateful and excited I am about getting a chance to help preserve an ancient and important breed like this. I feel like all of the past 25 years of poultry keeping is going really going to really pay off here. But I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch. lol

It's hard not to be really excited and start making plans, though. I am rethinking the design of a henhouse I was working on, I am now going to fix it up just for the Icelandics. I will post pictures of the project later today, so you can see what my plans are and how the project is coming along.

So, as promised: Pictures of my new chicken housing. The first is a picture of the shed which I am going to make into a henhouse & run. As you can see I have been painting it and am adding 4x4 support posts. The run will have corrugated metal on the roof.

This second picture is of my main layer house. The new chicken house will be of similar design. Behind the henhouse in this picture, I am adding on some group housing for my Turkeys and Bantams.

And this last pic is me and some of my mixed layer flock, who are quite tame. I look weird because (a) I am weird and (b) my husband sucks at picture taking. But there I am, nonetheless.

That's going to be nice! I hope you have a great hatch. Eggs are packaged and ready to ship in the a.m. I have them packed like they are pure crystal eggs! I have only shipped eggs once and have a perfect record for no broken eggs so I don't want to blow it now. I am waiting to tape up the box for Josh in the morning after Lukka makes her last contribution to the contest.

Mary
