Icelandic Chickens

I candled. 46 of the 62 Icelandics are still in the bator.

Shipping is just hard on eggs.

I'm staying positive.

I saw your report on the easter hatch thread. Is this the first candle? Did you note the clear ones vs quitters? I am just curious about fertility rates. 46 is a LOT of Icelandics!

I would say there were slightly more quitters than clears, but almost all of the clears looked scrambled.

Well that is good news, I guess better for the seller than the buyer! Sorry. Hope you get some beauties. Kathy should be getting her crested pair tomorrow. Last time I tracked them they had left CA!

All five of my survivors from NYD were crested.

The roo that looked like Isi is in Casa Grande in a huge chicken coop... if they freerange they'll have lots of room but there are just too many predators down there.

The roo that was rosecombed and black (Named Earth in Icelandic) is down the street at a friends. They will be getting 10 chicks from me and at least 5 will be Icelandics. I've told them to join BYC... they tell me they've been looking them up online... they are in a part of the neighborhood where feral chickens roam free but they promise they'll have a coop and run.

Then here I have Vindur with the two crested white pullets, Snjór & Blettur. They are looking lovely. Snjór has red highlights and Blettur has black spots.

I'm hoping they'll be laying by June!... maybe I can hatch some of my own!!

I figure I have to do another hatch simply for my W/BW Ameraucanas anyway... only ended up with 12 after the candle... We'll see how many I hatch.

Cheryl...........there isn't a person out there that could be upbeat with what you are going through. Good move contacting the media, you'll get somewhere there. It's their screw up, they just are being weasels and not wanting to pay for their colossal mistake. Keep fighting them, like Jake said - one piece at a time and you'll get there.

to you too Mary.

Thank you! And here's to holding out hope that at least one is female of the three. You all have me worried...

I had them since hatch and I'm pretty sure the one is a girl, if not I'll make it up to you

Thanks, Cheryl. I appreciate that. All six Juveniles (three Splash Marans, three Icelandics) are now all sleeping together in Juvenile Hall, up on the roosts. Yeah! The Big Girls let my 4 month old BCM in the big girl house, on a roost even (she'd been sleeping in a nesting box, not on the roost), so life is happy for chickens here on the Finca...

Thanks for the welcome, Andy! This seems like a nice thread--like the Bay Area one I often haunt! What is the average size these kids will turn out to be? When I pick them up, they seem very light-boned! Are the adults a smallish breed??
Clueless but learning...!

I've fine-tuned the borrowed hatcher, it's been a long day so I don't really remember how many Icelandic eggs I have in the bator (It's in my sig line) but they go into lockdown in the morning.

A quick candle earlier showed movement in all of them, like last time some look farther along than others and I have 3 with serious aircell malformities (THANK YOU Mr. Postman

)

Hubby-to-be is dishing up some ice cream so I better grab a suit, dessert in the hot tub is the best way to end a day.

Cheryl, don't give up your fight, it'll take time and energy so when you're feeling low just come back here and we'll share what we have

Ohh, there's wine to go with the ice cream. See ya!
