Icelandic Chickens

Hi Michelle

LGDs learn two ways, one is being reared with the livestock that they guard so they become their family. And being around the owner and seeing what they do and then stepping in. The later is 90% of how the English Shepherd learns, I took two youngsters to Samaria with me to learn Sheep herding and that is how they learned, going out with the flock every day. They are also good with chickens if started around them.

An Anatolian or Akbash will actively patrol its territory, and guard against intruders. I dont know a whole lot about Prys other then that they dont patrol as much as the Turkish dogs. But all three breeds need to be raised with the livestock, for chickens that means a pen right by them, they will bond and take ownership of them. I am biased towards both breeds having worked with them in Israel up in the hills.

I am sure the Pyrs would work for what you need, just get them young and keep them close to the chickens.

Good luck, the right dog can be a real blessing. On the others, SSS.

Looks like I might be getting another Pyr Puppy to train as an LGD to Chickens
The last one I trained was an adult Pyr, he just had the perfect personality for the job and took right to it.
He was adopted Super Fast

Will post pictures of the little bugger when he/she gets here.

The Icelandic Coop is almost done - picking up some free wood today. there are pictures posted on my BYC page if anyone is interested.

Happy Sping Everyone!

The coop is looking good!! Keep us posted on the Pyr, I'm thinking seriously about getting one once we move.

Thanks working on the back wall and the 2nd side wall as well as the celtic knotwork decorations.
With the pool right next to them they will think they are in Iceland

Off to pick up fence panels and take them apart

I had them since hatch and I'm pretty sure the one is a girl, if not I'll make it up to you

Thanks, Cheryl. I appreciate that. All six Juveniles (three Splash Marans, three Icelandics) are now all sleeping together in Juvenile Hall, up on the roosts. Yeah! The Big Girls let my 4 month old BCM in the big girl house, on a roost even (she'd been sleeping in a nesting box, not on the roost), so life is happy for chickens here on the Finca...

Thanks for the welcome, Andy! This seems like a nice thread--like the Bay Area one I often haunt! What is the average size these kids will turn out to be? When I pick them up, they seem very light-boned! Are the adults a smallish breed??
Clueless but learning...!

Dawn

They are LF, but on the smaller side. Like Sicilian Buttercup size.

I thought I remembered hearing you say something like that. My vet has chickens too and she asked about size of the Icelandics yesterday when the dog was getting her travel papers, I haven't actually seen an adult yet so I was guessing.

Now time to go pop some eggs into the hatcher.

Kathy's eggs are in the hatcher and we have a pip already.

I have 3 eggs with weird aircells, from shipping I think, they started out like the purple line and now look like the green line

I also have one with the aircell running lengthwise down the side of the egg.

They all had movement when I laid them in the hatcher this morning so
