Icelandic Chickens

Mine come from Marys from Sigrids RALA lines, and I am of the understanding that Sigrid did not ever mix hers at all, and I have another flock from Lyles first import of eggs, I have some from kathyinmo that I am of the understanding come from Marys RALA lines and have never been crossed. If I have this wrong Mary or Kathy please let me know. I also have eggs in the bator from Shannon from a line brought over by his great great great uncle that lay some eggs that tend toward a light brown, I understand that there is some controversy about whether or not an Icelandic can lay other than white or light cream colored eggs.
Regardless of that all my flocks are kept separated in the interest of Preservation. No lines are mixed here and to my knowledge no lines I have acquired were mixed prior to my acquisition.
In speaking to a professor concerning the issue of genetics, he assured me that the ability to trace genetics has gone way beyond chromosomes counts to the "molecular level" ( I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS< JUST PARROTING LINGO HERE) and that in reality it will be very easy to tell if birds are related, how closely etc. So I am collecting all the lines that are purported to be Icelandics and if in the future a line is refuted then I won't any longer hold that flock.
I appreciate everyones efforts who shares my interest in preservation, I thoroughly enjoy my chickens and the people that share this interest!

You asked to be corrected if you have it wrong and you do have it wrong Andy. I do not have any pure RALA "line." I started with two RALA hens and two non-RALA roosters. From those I hatched a lot of chicks. I added eggs that originated from Lyle Behls' line (via Marty Favre) at a later date and they have started laying. I have never separated my birds into imaginary lines. When I got the birds I was told that the roosters came from Flatey. Only in Sigrid's most recent post did she state they came from members of the Icelandic Preservation Society, and who knows what line those came from. The only way I could tell anyone for certain where the eggs came from would be if I had collected them from the nests myself. But, how would I know where the hen that laid it came from? That is all the information I have about the origin of the chickens or eggs I have given people.

I think the best thing for me to do now is to remove myself from this thread and this discussion. It has obviously gone somewhere I didn't intend it to go. As in most things in life, people come along with stronger views and opinions and we are smart to recognize when it is time to let go. My time on this earth is quite limited and I don't intend to spend it defending my chickens on a molecular level. I intend to spend it enjoying my chickens for their beauty and diversity, no matter where the egg was laid.

Best wishes to all.

Mary

If it even matters.... I understand how you feel, I am saddened by your decision. I do not have Icelandic, nor do I plan to since I freerange all my chickens together and could not guarentee that they would stay pure. I have however, followed this thread from the start with great interest. These chickens just facinate me and I do not know why ?

Best of luck and I also miss your pictures & videos.

Thanks Beth. I appreciate that.

To the group:
Please do not let my decision to leave result in posts that could get this thread closed. There is really good information here and it would be a shame to lose it. Many years ago I left my nurse administrator position because the staff wouldn't follow the safety rules. Within six months they had killed a patient and burned the building to the ground. I know when to leave.

I am very sorry to see you go from this thread Mary but I will respect your decision. I apologize for everything I have said that would make you leave. Thank you for all your advise, guidance, and eggs.

alright if everything is going well with my test batch when i candle May 7th then i will be ordering Icelandic chickens from whoever has some. There are many people in my area that have the icelandic sheep or horse and also want to chickens (besides me) and one person has the icelandic dog.
So after May 7th i would like to order eggs to be shipped later next week because my *target* hatch date of the test batch is May 16th.
