Icelandic Chickens

Mary cant you keep him as a wether??

I am getting some kids this summer, to raise as pack goats, and fun companions, one will probably be a doe, so 2 bucks(neutered) and a doe kid, one happy family. I have all this forest around here so some pack goats ought to make good use of it, Candy(BH) and I get about two miles a day in it now, whats 3 other little guys coming along?

The littlest chicks are a week old plus and showing a huge variety of feathering, and quite a few combs, I have a number of those unicorns, they seem to develop soon compared to the other combs. Its fascinating to see all of them develop.

I think this could well be an excellent representation of the colors possible in this flock, 30 right now, A mixed blue roo, a white splash roo, a once chipmunk but now brown with cape and crest roo, the silver chick, the black spash young teen, and who knows what others?? Blau is developing into a beautiful roo, and a gentleman. The Contessa is for sure the Contessa. Beautiful and regal. Isison is biding his time, adventurous and easy going. Looks a bit more like his Dad each day. Beautiful !

Have two roos promised, probably will be a pullet with each, after that will be watching them all closely til breeding season. That should leave me with about a dozen pullets, want to keep as much diversity as I can.

Of the six I hatched here the largest one is a pullet ! And the sweetest one, she comes right up still and settles down the quickest when picked up.

Love that sign, may paint it on the door of the coop, with another line ' best breasts, thighs and legs' added.

Mary, I hope it helps. It is so disappointing to think anyone would deliberately damage any box, let alone one marked "Live Embryos" on it!!

I am beginning to suspect that shipping could be a greater problem then I had thought, I tried to candle my eggs the day I received them, nothing, I tried 10 days later and used a mag light with focused beam in a darkened room, most all were inconclusive, there were only two for sure live. As it worked out I hatched 7 live, one died hatching, and one other pipped and didnt make it, so nine eggs out 42 hatched, the lowest I have ever had, the hatcher I am suspicious of, right now the incubator is on a test run, its held at 99.5-100 for two weeks so far, never under it or over. It has a fan and egg turner.

Next week its the hatchers turn. We shall see but I am suspicious of the cold weather on one batch of eggs, and poor handing as a contributor on the others. The one unit I have had for 3 years, always got over 80% on hatches, not fantastic but sure beats this time.

The jury is still out.

Well, no word on the chicks yet.. I called Tami at the PO and they weren't on the noon truck.. Of course no one between Sacramento and Idaho has a scanner that works so we can see where they are..

There is one more truck today at 5 so I'm hoping they'll be on that one.. Tami promised to call me if they are..

I have been tracking them all day too Shawn. The crud about tracking with Express is just lies. They claim you can track them and always know where they are but there is rarely an entry between drop-off and delivery.

yeah I asked Tami about scanning other than departure and delivery... they are supposed to... unfulfilled promises kinda makes you wonder if they are run by the government..

I confirmed with the people at the main postal hub yesterday and they told me that all lives are flown by Fed-Ex planes in the US. My guess is they only get scanned when they are in the postal system. I think that is why you often see another scan when they hit the city where they move from the airplane to USPS trucks. I told them that the last birds I shipped arrived next day even though I was quoted two days. Her response was that they were always happy to hear of good service from Fed Ex since they work under contract to the PO.
