Icelandic Chickens

Thanks but I need to edit to say "four" eggs in bator now. Lukka laid one this afternoon and I just brought it in. After this I am going to save them for a few days. This will be a crazier hatch than that one Kathy did last month!

Mary

What are you going to do with them when they hatch?

Matthew

My plan is to raise them until I figure out gender and then sell pairs to people interested in the preservation of the Icelandic chicken. I am going to find people who will make sure there is no crossbreeding so that the Icelandics remain pure. I am planning on keeping many of the first that I hatch so this plan is for down the road sometime. Money made from the sale of birds or eggs will be donated to the preservation effort in Iceland.

Good luck

Can't wait for baby pictures.

What a neat story! I love the colors! I can see why you cried at the USPS.

Tears of joy!

Hey, btw, I'm a nurse, too...it's always great to meet fellow nurses!

Keep us updated, please!

It is my understanding that they are actually very hardy and disease resistant. Many of the Icelandics in the US now trace back genetically to the 11 eggs hatched out by Lyle Behl in 2003. He has had hatching eggs available since 2005 so I would think that by now they would have been exposed to the common chicken diseases. I have heard how hardy they are but never that they get sick a lot. I'll do my quarantine and hope for the best.

Sigrid told me about the law banning any animal imports into Iceland. She said the Icelandic horse are magnificent and if they are shown outside of Iceland they can never return to Iceland.

Mary

I almost gots ome Icelandic chicken hatching eggs from Lyle in 2005. We hadIcelandic sheep. Then the divorce....well we sold everything. Took two years to get the kids back from the state. But all is well and we have chickens again. May consider Icelandic sheep in the future. Still would like some Icelandic chickens. Will have to contact Lyle sometime! Your birds are beautiful!

I read about this breed some years back it was interesting. Please keep us informed as to temperment and if they are flighty or not. These would be something I would be interested in helping with preserving bloodlines. Mike

This thread has been so interesting and exciting. Good luck with those eggs!

Also, I know there's not a hurry at the moment, but when it gets down to that time I'm interested in helping preserve bloodlines! I have a separate pen I could keep a trio of Icelandics in easily (and by the time you're ready to find places for some birds, I might have room for more than that!), as well as an incubator to hatch eggs.

This is such an awesome effort.

Very, very interesting.

Please keep us posted. I can't wait to see the babies when they hatch.

All of the birds are quite nice, but Lukka is stunning!

I would be interested in a pair if you're keeping a list. What a great cause. I'm going to start a breeding program with Nankins once I find out exactly how to go about it. Those Icelandics are so pretty!
