Icelandic Chickens

Hello to all, been quite a while since I checked in, my computer is out for a while and I only get to the library once in a while, by the time I catch up on my thousands of emails my hour time is gone! Anyways wanted to report that my Icelandics have grown out well, of course the rooster to hen ratio is about 4 to 1 but I am going to thin out some boys, they are worrying the poor pullets to death, I ended up with one pullet with a topknot, not sure which person it came from as my color legbands all dissapeared, I ended up with two abusulutely gorgeous blue under gold or silver roosters, these two and the one black breasted red rooster will all be my starter breeders along with the lemon blue pullet and the black breasted red looking pullets, one of which has the topknot, also have some odd colors, I have takens some pictures this morning but have to get the wife to download them for me, I will post some as soon as I can. I think in total I ended up with about 8 or 10 Icelandics. I do have some of my American games in with them and will be seperating them all soon to set up some breeding pens, the pullets have not started laying yet but the stags are very active. Also wanted to tell NotaFarm Mary that I ended up with only three of the Java chicks to maturity and as you can figure they are all boys!!! BUT!!! I ended up with one Black, one Auburn shouldered Black and one a Self Blue color!!! Go figure!!!! Mary I would love to get some more of the Auburn Java eggs if and when you have some available and would gladly take some more Icelandic eggs in hopes of getting more girls from them!!! Please contact me on my direct email at [email protected] if or when you are ready to ship some and let me know how much $ I need to send!!! Thanks and to all I have really enjoyed raising out my Icelandics, they are a lot like my gamefowl in color patterens and build, I also have Games with topknots but the Icelandics all have the Pea/Rosy type combs and white earlobes so far so it is easy to tell them from my Games and they are a bit smaller in size so far also! Thank you all whom sent me eggs to start with and for those who maintaine this website. It is great!!! Hi Kathy!!! We miss you jumping in on the Okie BYC thread too!!! Have a blessed day all!!! Ok... here's pictures of my 4 oldest icelandics.. the two pullets are from Kathy and are 3 months old, the two roos are from Mary's eggs and are almost 3 months old.. The pullet with the roo has a very nice crest and the white roo has a very thin line of feathers on his shanks..

Here is a picture of our East fence line with the first post on the corner.. Our 10.5 acres runs south 885 feet (in front of the post) and west 500 feet (to the right of the post)

It is going slower than I would like we were only able to get 7 holes done this morning.. I have 2 that must have a big rock in the bottom as the auger locked up 1/2 way down.. so we have to finish digging 2 five foot deep holes by hand now..

It's going to be very nice when finished though.. The perimeter fence around the 10 acres will be 6' 3" tall. It is a high tensile woven wire fence by StayTuff. Can't wait to have it finished!!

Busy outside today, trying to miss the rain that is suppose to come this afternoon. I did get a few pictures a few days ago. Not great, as it was sprinkling and raining off and on and was muddy. Oh well, you can see the chicks anyway.

Dang, going back to work has sure cut in to my computer time! Lovin' all the pictures! Keep 'em coming!

Hi Mary

when you said .22 auto I thought that you meant a .22 automatic pistol, practice a lot with it.

Is your white splash chick a pullet then? Which comb are you expecting on her? I was just out sitting with my little flock and had five sitting on me at once, one on eac h shoulder and 3 on the lap. I'd like to think it was my personal magnatism but I think its just that I am a no danger high point to sit besides the roost.

Kathy I like that shed, that is probably what I am going to do hasty the end of Sept for the goats and the chickens. Quick to get in. And out of the wind and the weather.

I think she is a pullet Jake. Her comb is flat like the ones that end up looking like rosecomb with a little Icelandic flair to them.

Believe me, this is a quicky! Nothing special, just another ghetto coop.

Mostly done now, except for some paint on raw wood, putting in the roosts and hardware cloth window on the door. Putting up the fence now. Thundering now and rain is about to start (which means my internet will go down). My junk pile is getting low. I had tons of used 17 foot long corrugated tin. I have used a lot of it. My coops are all under huge trees, mostly sycamore trees, so they are fully shaded, and I feel ok with using tin there. If it were in the sun, they would surely bake in there.

Love it Kathy! Hey, wanna see pics of the Barred Rock and new Hampshire that I hatched on Easter from your eggs?

This is my Barred Rock. I named her Alice Bell after my Grandmother. Isn't she stunning?

I named the New Hampshire Rusty after my mother. That is her nickname. I think it fits!

I am trying to get a decent pic of my little black Ameraucana but she hates the camera and runs like the wind! I am gonna' go try again.

Final tally, all the chicks hatched!

Skye has 5:

The beige girl has 5 under her in this bin:

Miss Polaris has 5 too. One is hiding.
