Icelandic Chickens

I was browsing through the forums today and low and behold did I stumble across this thread!! I was so excited. It is always nice to find others who have this rare bird!!! I myself have a flock of icelandics that I was lucky enough to obtain. So I thought I would share some pics of a few of my flock.

This is Calico. He was my first Icelandic roo that I got as a chick.

My only black hen. It's hard to see but she has some orange neck feathers too.

My newest addition. A friend of mine who has icelandics gifted him to me along with some hens to expand my flock. I am truely grateful to him! He is a prince among roosters! So gentle and we can even pick him up! He is the favorite of the flock!!!

They were penned today, for the first time, because they wanted to court the free ranging girls from the Layers Coop (who now have no roosters watching after them).

Aw, beautiful Kathy. We are sad here today. We lost one of our mottled juvenile pullets who somehow got into the goose pond and drowned. I found her this morning and bawled like a baby all day. I buried her in a beautiful spot behind the house by the creek. It is so awful to lose one. I know you understand how it feels.

I am sooooo sorry to hear that, Mary.

Yes, I do know how that feels, and I know you are heartsick over it.

Any time we have a loss, it hurts. Some say they are, "just chickens," but they are much more than that when you raise them like family pets. Again, I am so sorry to hear of your loss.

Thanks Kathy. If Lukka weren't broody 24/7 or my 3 oldest Icelandic pullets would start laying I could put some real eggs under these numbskulls!

Yes, that's three broodies sharing two nest boxes. Judge Judy and Skye on the left and Raven, my BCM (who just started laying!) on the right. The two on the left are sitting on air and Raven is sitting on two wooden eggs. Think I need to fire up the Brinsea as a back-up?

Don't hate me Kelly!

It must be something in the water.
