Icelandic Chickens

Can you get specific bands with certain number series for chickens in general?

When I was raising OEGBs I ordered some but dont remember from who, they were numbered in sequence and had a code and the year and then the number. They were about 3 times the cost of regular ones. Good luck in finding them.

Rain, piece of cake. You lucky girls!

Laura (Hillbilly Hen) is in Michigan.

Got shovels?

Michiganders are going to need them this winter, according to Accuweather forecasters, who today predicted a harsh winter for much of lower Michigan, the entire Great Lakes, and especially in Chicago

"People in Chicago are going to want to move after this winter," said Josh Nagelberg, AccuWeather.com long range meteorologist. Snow and cold will be unusually harsh there, this year, he said.

As for Michigan?

"I think this winter is going to be an exceptional one," AccuWeather forecaster Paul Pastelok said.

He said Michigan's southwest corner, and up to Traverse City, should prepare for early season snows, fueled by cold northwest winds crossing warm Lake Michigan waters.
.
"It's going to start fast. By the Thanksgiving holiday, we're going to see pretty good lake effect kick in, and it probably doesn't end through the Christmas holiday.

"The thing with Michigan, is that there's going to be three types of systems: clipper style, lake effect and then late-in-the-season storms," all adding up to extra snow, he added.

And Great Lakes snow buildup could act to prolong the colder-than-normal weather beyond February and into early spring, forecasters said.

If you're "wary of scary" when it comes to weather forecasting, we understand.

So we checked with the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, to see what our local meteorologists have to say.

Mostly, the answer is "stay tuned." NWS winter forecasts are coming out soon, in mid-October.

But we are in a "La Nina" weather pattern.

And that produces above average snowfall for Michigan. We were in La Nina late last winter, too. Remember the February blizzard?

"The strong 2010-11 La Niña contributed to record winter snowfall, spring flooding and drought across the United States, as well as other extreme weather events throughout the world," according to NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Need a La Niña definition refresher? Here goes:

La Niña is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon where cooler-than-average Pacific Ocean temperatures influence global weather patterns. It typically occurs every three to five years, NOAA said.

I am worried. Kelly made the squash dinner rolls from the recipe on my website and hasn't been heard from since.

It rained all day here so no progress on the new coop.

I gave the 13 Icelandic chicks to a nice young couple starting a farm. Maybe they will check in here. I cleaned the feather dander from every surface in my office. Yuck. I set eggs for the two chick orders I have yet to fill. I am hoping to add six more in the morning. I sure hope fertility is better!

That's it. I am off to bed early.

Drumstick Diva and I are in the "Worst" area!!! If you split the "S" in "SNOW" into quarters, I'd be where the 4 corners meet. Diva would be straight east of me between the "S" and "N" in "SNOW".

I want to move after every winter..........actually, I want to move about this time every year cuz I know what's coming!!
I guess we'll all have to go visit Laree and Mahonri in that "MILD & DRY" (with the emphasis on DRY) area!

Nah Chicagoans are used to crappy forcasts, in 1985 Willow Springs set the record for lowest temp.ever in the state -32 below. Not as impressive as Alaska but still, something to talk about.

I am in MI, about half hour below Hillbilly Hen. I am trying to get things done before everything get buried in snow, like get the new coop built, the garden cleaned out and tilled, 5 acres of corn picked, etc.
