Icelandic Chickens

I posted this picture on another thread, and someone responded with:
"Kathy, in the last picture I can see a separate pen in the background with a couple of beautiful roosters inside. They have a cream color on the hackels what kind are they."

Oh I envy you more for the nice DRY PENS!!!!!!!!!
We are inches deep in slippery snotty clay MUD!
Beautiful Birds BTW~~

Hi Robin

Great minds work alike, I have been wondering about them, I picked up an oil space heater today and am looking into the diesel ones. There are also kerosene ones, no odor too, so I am doing some surfing on them.

The answer of 'trust, dna or shut up' is the operative one right now.

There are paper frauds in all other livestock so I expect we will see it with Icelandics. In the meantime all that we can do is to continue on with what we have. As with all livestock, trust is imperative.

Re DNA, I would very much like to see a report on the birds in Iceland, and how they compare/differ from modern breeds, it would be helpful to know, but just something to know, I know now that I like what I have and that they are unique. So the report would just be another item in the info file.

Life is good and better with Icelandic Chickens and Pack Goats.

Everyone who come by and looks at my layer yard goes nuts over her and the Barred Rock. I scored!

and you can't have her back cuz she's named Rusty after my Mom. So don't even ask.

The black Ameraucana is gorgeous too. I can't wait for her to lay an egg.

Well, I am very happy to hear you got the best one. Now you know what that means..... You have to show her. Give her a bath and take her to a show and win her a pretty ribbon. Yes, Rusty needs a ribbon!

I don't do chicken baths. No showing for me. I will breed and hatch, while trying my best to produce birds to the standard. I leave it up to others to do the showing.

Some day I hope there are Icelandics all over the US and there is an Icelandics Show! Now that would be fun! I might even consider a chicken bath then.

Is there such a thing? Emu shows? Is there a "standard" for emus?

Naw, I think they are just in petting zoos.

I'm not showing ever either Kathy. I've been told my welsummer rooster would do excellent in a show, but it's just not worth the risk of bringing a disease home to my flock.

As for emu standard, I'm pretty sure it is "will eat anything, including screws, dogtags and jewelry".
