I candled some of the eggs last night that I got from coldupnorth. I can see some veining! Yay! And I saw a very obvious little eyeball in one. Awww.

And in the spirit of adventuresome Icelandics, here's Flekka in our kitchen today.

Yay - glad you can see some veining on the eggs. Flekka looks similar to my Maeja (you should have some eggs from her too). Not a great picture of her, but she is my most skittish hen.

I am progressing, slowly, on the pen building, but by Mid May should be all caught up and be able to start the Chicken houses, two breeds to each house, and each with an outside run. The plan is to let one breed out to range about each day. I think that this will help greatly with their diet balancing as well as strengthening the ranging ability of each breed.

I am thinking that sometime in June I will be able to put some Icelandic eggs in the incubator so I will be interested in hearing from those with hatching eggs available.

Life goes on, and it is good.

Hi Jake! Did you still want my roo's and hen? I really need the space.

how many icelandic hens do you have per roo. I know they can handle 8-10, but I only have 3 hens to my one roo and thier poor backs are naked. I tried to put a saddle on put the hen was pulling it off in no time. Is there any thing else I can do to help this? Trim the roosters nails or something? Even my light sussex pen where I have 7 girls to one roo are starting to get naked

I have 8 hens to a roo in the Icelandic pen... how big is your pen? more space might help too..

I have three pullets and two cockerels, but the access that my boys have to them is limited, and it is always while mixed with the rest of the flock (about ten more hens/pullets) I tried to put an apron on a pullet that has her feathers pretty torn up, and the men folk elected to pull it off of her, too. Soooo they now get limited time with the girls to ensure that they don't stress them. They (the cockerels) take their job very seriously, and I don't want a bunch of naked hens out there.

My remaining egg from Flekka is working on hatching. I've been watching it for the last couple of days and didn't see any movement whatsoever, nor did it respond to light like it usually does. There was a bump on the shell where it looked like it had tried to pip, but couldn't break through the membrane. I was sure it was dead after a while, so I took a needle and very carefully lanced it, adjusted the humidity in the bator, and put the egg back overnight. I checked it this morning and found, much to my surprise, that it was moving again and trying to pip internally. I think it finally did pip internally this evening, but I've been moistening the little hole in the shell and checking on it every so often. I'm sorry, but I am just worried about this little one and had the feeling that I needed to help. I have no idea what day it's on. I'll be checking it again in the morning before work, and then again when I get home. I'm doing everything I can to try and avoid it getting shrink-wrapped in there.

Bucked up and ordered Icelandics and Swedish Flower Hen eggs from the same seller (great ratings) off of E-bay.

One day from landing in Alaska to my doorstep - but they hung out in Washington State for four long days. My postal carrier went back to the office and scrounged around to find them, then called from my driveway to let me know she located them. Wish everyone who worked at USPS was that cool.

The eggs are in the incubator now. A new brooder is being built in the garage. I haven't had this much anxiety since having a baby.

Looking out the window at a foot of new snow. I wish I was making this up. Still have two feet of it in the yard. Where is that Al Gore and his Nobel Peace Prize for warning us all about Global Warming? I have an Inconvenient Truth I would like to share with him!

Wish us luck. If these eggs don't hatch round trip to Reykjavik from Anchorage is $500 Round trip right now. May need to take a vacation.
