Just a personal thought, if you keep a SC hen it will produce a SC from time to time but overal your flock in your climate may well be better off using RC roosters only. This winter none of my RCs have had frosted combs, all of the SCs have, -5 this morning, same forcast for tomorrow.

Genetically I dont want to lose the SC, we dont know yet what traits all travel together but from my own observations I see many of them clumped together, ex. SC and the splash red pattern. The Isi line produces many splash with SCs. But I do get some ocassional dark ones. I believe its going to take some years and study as to what travels with what genes.

Much for us to learn about in our genetic treasure house Icelandics

Interesting. I'm still catching ont o all of the "Isi" "Falki" talk, but from what I know now, my chicks came from the Sigrid line... I'm not exactly sure of the parent stock, but all four of my chicks have RC.

When have you all been able to have a general idea of sex? What are your first signs?

For me it's when it crows or lays an egg. I'm not real good at sexing them. I think the first noticeable difference is comb and wattles larger on the cockerels.

Ace, I can tell on most of mine at around 8 weeks, because by then most of the boys are starting to develop pink combs. I've found that wattles aren't always a reliable indicator of gender at that age.

Thank you everyone for the well wishes!

Jake, my SC is actually dark with silver on his back. Not an ounce of red or orange on him. He's from Shawn's stock, as is my RC roo with the orange on his back. I'll try and get a picture of the SC while he's outside today. I keep waffling on whether or not I can give him up. I'm hoping to live in a small city in the Utah West Desert within a couple of years, and it can get pretty hot there (bleh) so I think this roo would be well suited for that environment. The only time I've gotten frostbite on my RC roo's comb was when he was crammed in a coop with too many hens and poor air circulation. Yeah, that didn't last long before everyone got split up.

And I agree, Falki is one gorgeous boy!

Okay, that didn't take long. Gunther doesn't mind having his picture taken.

Check out that wattle action

Here's one with Flekka behind Gunther.

Both Gunther and his brother Sven are from the Sigrid line. I definitely see more "solid" color clumps going on in that line, as opposed to the spangling and mottling of the Behl line. Very interesting.

I can't remember if I put this up or not, but here is a picture of Ike, one of the cockerels that came from Laurie's flock. This is the chocolate chick I had hatch out last year.

Don't mind his tail. He kept smashing it against the slats of his carrier he was in.
