What breed of goats are they Mike?? They are beauties !
I have great news..........
My Icelandics are REHOMED ! To a perfect home!
Beth and her husband came yesterday and we loaded her new Icelandics into their truck , with help from my son when he got home from work. It was a very good job done well. Her name is Beth and I will let her fill in other details herself.
Suffice to say is they couldnt have gone to a better home ! She and Russ live near Traverse City MI, close to the UP and more winter weather.
I have now a rooster from MaryNotaFarm, Gose, and 3 pullets. So the beginning of a great flock, but few enough for my sone to care for while I am away. By mid summer I am hoping the not good part of now is over. All in all I am blessed far more then most others.
Beth is a nurse, has other chickens but is now very interested in the most unique pure breed of chicken on planet Earth.
And I will coninue on with my flock, genes of Mary O'Brians Isi line and MaryNotaFarms beautiful RC and Crested line.
I told Beth yesterday that I would gladly contribute to a good DNA study of the Icelandic itself, and in comparison to DNA on 'modern' breeds.
I am serious about this. We have a very unique breed, one that I am sure is the most purebred one in the world. Its not the oldest, but I will argue for its being the most pure of outside breeding of any other chicken breed. I will help fund a DNA study to examine exactly that. Put my money where my mouth is. So, if anyone knows a good lab or University who can do that I am all ears.
They are a genetic treasure. ALL of the lethals have long been bred out of them. Yet, I dont know of another breed that has the geneticly expressed diversity that it displays.
I can go on, I bent poor Beth and Russ's ears on that at length yesterday.
Can one get cauliflower ears from listening to the qualities of our Icelandics???
I am heading out, all is well here, and I am sure with Beths new Icelandic family. May they be richly blessed.
Color me a Happy Icelandic owner. And welcome Beth when she can post.
The chicks I had gotten from Laurie/coldupnorth laid their first egg yesterday!
I was confused at first because it was tinted and thought they only lay white eggs, but she said two of her original hens also lay tinted eggs and they lighten over their cycle. Also came across this link http://www.aviculture-europe.nl/nummers/10E06A03.pdf on this thread that says "The egg shells come in a variety of white and cream to light brown" Keep learning new things about this breed!
So how many of you have tinted/brown Icelandic layers?
