Icelandic Chickens

Just reread that post and realized how long it was. Sorry about that! I just had to share with someone. None of my other friends undertand- they all just think I'm a crazy chicken lady (which I am, of course!).

Yes, sharing with "non peeps" just makes them think you are more crazy than they already thought you were!

We "get it" and have all "been there" with bubbling excitement that needs to be shared with others who understand! Congrats on the chicks, sorry you lost so many but it is all a learning experience so next one should be better!
I hope the pullets will all take a turn at being broody for you........watching them with chicks is the best entertainment!!

So far so good. Put 13 eggs in the incubator a week ago and 8 are fertile and developing as hoped. Already starting to collect for my next test hatch. Going to need another incubator. Love these birds. So much variety. Being part Scandinvian perhaps I'm a bit bias but great chickens either way.

Maldwin, Welcome to the Icelandic thread!

How long have you had Icelandics? Where did you them? I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures if you get a chance!

I have had Icelandics since last September. I got hatching eggs from Dave at Whippoorwill farms. I will have to work on some pics in the next few days.

@Maldwin David Grote has a wonderful flock, congrats on your journey with them!

Here is a picture from this past weekend of my flock enjoying the bare ground..,

I thought I had a broody when Heppni stayed on the nest overnight......but no, she was off the next morning and didn't return

This is the second time she has done this. I don't know if she is just laying late and therefore still on the nest or if she is thinking about being broody. These Easter Icelandics may be raised in the brooder......

Love the free ranging. I hope you get a broody in time.

Kathleen, congrats on all the new babies! :D

Maldwin, welcome and yay for the eggs! :) I've got my fingers crossed for your hatch.

I'm setting another batch of Icees today. 23 eggs total, so almost a full house. I calibrated my thermometer (stupid me for assuming it was correct) and found it was a little off. Hopefully this hatch does better than the last few.
