Icelandic Chickens

So far 5 have hatched and movement still in two of the eight that were left after the candling. Second batch should start to hatch the 24th. 15 developing well in that batch. 36 eggs ready to set for test batch 3 tomorrow. Here is a pic of a few from batch 1.

Mary I love to see mamas and babies - that silkie chick looks so very tiny. Are you trying to grow out your own silkie-bator?

Who needs "silkie-bator" when I got Icelandics?!

Mary, those pictures are cute. The first one is my favorite. Hvit is a leggy little thing, isn't she?

Yes, I never noticed how leggy she was until those pictures. She is only 10 months old so maybe she'll "grow into" those legs!

Nice group so far

that the remaining ones make it and the next groups do well.

I am very excited, I will be getting a dozen Icelandic chicken eggs tomorrow. Any words of wisdom from the wise Icelandic sages here for tips or techniques for a successful hatch??
Welcome! Words of wisdom from wise sages may not apply....

.... but.....Icelandics are not difficult to incubate. Use standard temps and humidity for your area. White/tinted eggs are easy to see into so monitoring air cells and development isn't a problem. They may hatch a bit earlier than other breeds. They are "ready to go out of the shell" so be prepared before they are due with your brooder. Make sure it has a top.

Well 7 of 8 hatched. One seems weak, but we will see what morning brings.
Seven of eight is good. I had seven hatch for the Easter Hatchalong and lost 1 at two days. It failed to thrive. It was from a small pullet egg. I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. I have rarely lost chicks that hatch on their own.

Awesome Maldwin!! I need to get with you and get some eggs. It would be worth the drive up your way. I have been hatching a lot of barnyard mix to sell but really want more Icelandics and an Icelandic roo. Glad yours are doing well!
