Icelandic Chickens

So, last week I covered my entire chicken yard in netting to keep the hawks out. We had to do some patching around a fig tree in the yard.

I just looked out my window in time to see one of the Icelandic babies climb the tree and make HIS way out a small opening onto the top of the netting. Of course, a major rescue operation was necessary. Skye was squawking like I was trying to kill her stupid baby. The stupid baby was pecking me through the net while I tried to maneuver him back to the opening.

Mary........I really enjoyed seeing your place and the Icelandics. The pictures just don't do them justice, they are beautiful. Love your house and property also! And thanks so much for the nesting boxes. Although you may not invite me over again, since I told you you have an extra rooster.

And for everyone else...........that pot they found on Mary's property is HUGE!!!!! Like 6 feet across!

Just to clarify, the "pot" found on my property is an antique monastery cooking pot!

Mary, just thanking you for the eggs I got from you at the meet-up! The eleven Icelandic eggs are in the incubator as of last night and I'm hoping for a good hatch! If this hatch does work out, I'll be keeping the Icelandics separate from my other chickens to keep them pure. They may end up being roommates with the ducks and guineas, we'll see.

Icelandics are gorgeous birds, and I am so excited to hopefully become a part of this preservation effort! I'll keep you updated on what's going on with the eggs.

Thanks again! And seeing as I'm close by, I'll have to come visit your Icelandics sometime!

Ok, today was hatch day for 8 Icelandic eggs. Three were under my broody silkie, the rest in the Brinsea. Blue Mama, my broody had hatched two of her three when I got up this morning. I had three pipped in the incubator. When my first one hatched I switched it with her and took her egg and put it in the incubator. Then I added my next hatchling to her brood. Guess what? She moved out of the nest box with her two "real" babies and left mine in the cold! I had to set up the brooder real quick. So now she has two babies and I have three in the brooder and three piped in the incubator.

Here is Blue Mama with her babies:

Here are my three babies, which I think are cuter and Blue Mama made a huge mistake in rejecting them. I'm just making an observation.

I'll post pictures when my next three hatch. Two are pipped and was is wiggling.

My Silkie mama just hatched 5 eggs (100%). One week earlier I had hatched 2 (I'm talking all of these are Silkies). I put the 2 in with her and she took them. Lucky me!

Maybe try again tomorrow and see if she will take them????

I am thinking I should be getting an egg any time now, Mary. April 22 was my hatch date..... 6 months ago. Kola is looking alot redder in the face lately. What do ya think?

I am not giving her another chance with MY babies. She'll just have to raise her two not-as-pretty ones!

My pullets who are laying now started at about 5 1/2 to 6 months. They came from a staggered hatch so I don't recall their exact ages. I swear my next group from the Icelandic eggs I got from Marty Favre look ready to start soon too. I guess this means you haven't found new homes for your Icelandics yet. I feel bad about that. Maybe soon.

I guess I will just have to hatch if she starts laying then, won't I?

Whoever ends up with these beautiful birds will just have to take the babies, too!

I was telling Brittney she has to take the Icelandics to auction tomorrow.
