Icelandic Chickens

Gotta brag about my roos. What a gorgeous group of guys! (The mottled one in the foreground was a hen until Happy Chooks came over last week and ruined that!)

I just love my Icelandics! A neighbor stopped today to tell me he slows down every time he drives by to see them!

Hi all! Droppin in to say a big THANK YOU to The Warden for the 11 eggs she allowed me to take home and incubate last weekend! We are sooo excited! Icelandics are some amazing birds, really beautiful and such a wonderful thing to have a suprise at the end, one doesnt know what the chick will grow up to look like! How FUN!!

Here's the update on the eggs- As of today, 7 out of 11 eggs are showing definate embryos! I am keeping the others in there till day 11, just to be sure.

That is good news! The 12 I sent to Texas were all fertile and they were laid before yours. Maybe it was the ride in the car to LaFayette that did it!

Hubby was driving! Anyway, 7 out of 11 from my little pullet girls would be awesome! I am so happy that you are excited about the project. Remember your eggs came from the offspring of Lukka and Henna, the RALA birds Sigrid sent me! They are special eggs!

MY PLAN:

I am wondering if I hatch eggs between now and the Stockton Show in January, would I be able to sell pairs, trios or quads at the show? I think if I did some advance marketing on the forums and the Yahoo group maybe I could find some people interested in helping the cause. As always, any proceeds would go to the Icelandic Chicken Preservation group in Iceland. I am getting about 2-4 eggs a day and recent fertility rates have been close to 100%. My two incubators each hold 24 eggs. I have 5 babies now, probably 8 by morning plus 4 juvies. So that's 12. I have 18 eggs collected and they will go into the incubator in the next couple of days when I get a total of 24. So, I am getting about 3 eggs average per day. It will take 8 days to collect 24 eggs. I can incubate 48 every three weeks. There are 14 weeks until the show. Divided by three that's about 4 hatches. I have two incubators. That's 200 chicks? OMG is it my math or what? Someone help me here. Maybe I just need to re-think the plan???

No the plan is flawed. That's too many chickens! Can you imagine the cost of sales cages for the show? I am going to have a good night's sleep and re-think this plan.
