The Great Icelandic Hatching Project Report:

I set 28 eggs on the 18th and candled today. Fourteen were fertile. So that's a 50% fertility rate for pullet eggs. I'm happy with that. I am hoping by removing the two extras roos, the fertility rate will increase. Less chasing and more dating, if you know what I mean.

Since I had space in the Brinsea after tossing the clears I went ahead and set the 14 eggs I have collected since setting the first batch. Of course I dated them! At lockdown I'll move some to the other Brinsea.

I am hoping to hear again from Andy in Texas regarding the eggs I sent him and the two local test hatches.

This is fun!

By the way, Kola's eggs taste great. You guessed it .... not fertile!

I think they need to be on the ground to mate!

Honestly, the boys and girls here do not sleep together.

Errrr, I mean, roost together. The girls sleep WAY WAY up there near the ceiling, and the boys roost where they are suppose to - - - on the roosts. A couple times Blauman has tried to roost with the girls, but he has never been able to get comfortable up there. He flaps around awhile and then returns to the roost.

All six are still doin great! I admit to candling about every other day. Its so cool to incubate white eggs (never had white before, just tan and brown) we can see so much better inside! All the chickies are active and moving alot.

We are so super excited to see what hatches out! We are due for hatching this Halloween.

HEY SILVER PHOENIX, WHERE ARE YOUUUUUUUUUUUU????

Has she updated us yet? Hope we hear from her soon.

STOP that!

Remember, they are very fragile. I have seen too many posts where people drop them (terrible accidents) Also, bacteria from just touching them can also jeopardize them. And ...... OK, I will quit.

Really though ..... Good luck on your hatch!

Yup, I only candle on day 10 and day 18. That's it. Too many things can go wrong.

If I were on my farm, I'd be getting some Icelandics.

I just think it's weird that there is no standard look.

It's not weird at all

most Scandinavian landrace breeds do not have a "standard look" colourwise.
When thinking about it that they where mainly created by nature (climate, available daylight, environment) and less by humans selecting after looks, that's just natural and not too strange.
I do not have Icelandics, but I have a colourful landrace flock and I'd never ever trade it for a flock where all chickens look the same.

And while I'm writing anyways, I have not seen that mentioned in this thread, but does anyone know if the Icelandics have down feathers attacked to their body-feathers, like the Hedemora chickens do?
