Icelandic Chickens

Oh am i supposed to give this hatch to Mary?

No, not at all. She's figuring that only 1/2 of the eggs she just stuck in the bator will develop. I'm just pointing out the error of her chicken math!

ETA: How are the girls doing? Happy to be out of those cages I bet!

ahhhh got it, sorry brain only working 50% today, other 50% is on my Dad, Thanks....although with 90 eggs in the bator i might be sneaking them back onto Mary's property.

Did you hear I'm getting Mille Fleur Leghorns?

Yes, but apparently Kathy's roo(s) are taking their job much more seriously than are mine! I am safe because these eggs are the oviduct product of hens housed with slacker roos! My second-in-command cockeral still suffers a beat down every time he tries to improve the fertility rate around here. I am guessing 50-60%.

The Warden,

I would like to ask a couple questions in reference to Icelandic Chickens. I have read most of thread to this time but not found information of interest.

Could you direct me to the paper that investigated the Icelandic Chickens relatedness to other breeds?

Did at least some populations exist under feral conditions for a time?

Are they good at scratching through snow to get food? I am not familiar with snow depth where breed was developed.

Will you and your fellows interested in the breed at some point begin exchanging birds to conserve genetic diversity?

Mary, I hate it when I have hawks are hanging around the yard. I had 4 flying around the other day.
I candled today, couldn't wait, it looks like 10 of 15 are developing. Sounds like the same ratio you had.

OMG! ! ! I would have been scared stiff! Did they dive at the chickens?

Scary thing here is the dang cold. High of 15 today. Tonight is to be -15 with wind chill of 40 BELOW ZERO ! ! What the heck is this all about? For cryin' out loud! I am no advocate for heat in the coops, but I confess, all my coops have heat tonight. I was surprised that the breeder barn was 40* today.

Keep those kids safe, Mary!
