Icelandic Chickens

Well those pictures of iceland just had me drooling on my keyboard! Thanks so much. I think I just added "visit Iceland" to my bucket list!

Welcome teacher and students!

And for those interested, here are my first two babies out of the shells. There were three more last night but they weren't dry. I'll head down to the barn right now and check them out. I decided to brood them in the barn from the get-go.

Beautiful, but cold this morning. The canadians were the first to greet me.

Isi was on his morning watch spot in the window waiting for the pop door to open.

The rest of the crew waited patiently.

The news in the incubator was not so good. Three new hatchlings were there but one I culled immediately. It had a horribly twisted leg with a swollen, red hock. Just picking the little angel up made it cry out. It was not anything I was going to try to fix. RIP little baby.

The other two look good although one has a dried sticky head. I am going down with a soft toothbrush to try to brush the gunk out. I don't like to get them wet this young. He is doing just fine despite the silly hairdo. So here they are. Sticky baby is in the back, out of view.

Here is sticky baby.

So there are two eggs left to hatch. One is peeping and has been pipped since yesterday with no progress but it was a "late" egg, put in a day after the others. Technically it's hatch day is today. The other is moving a little but no pip yet. They better hurry up, I have eight more eggs going on lockdown tomorrow and they need that incubator!

I hope you are not sick of donkey stories yet because I have a new one. Jack finally had had enough of Diana's diva ways yesterday and gave her a royal beatdown. As luck would have it, I was there with my camera.

It all started with Jack finding a nice, soft, warm, and dusty spot of ground for a dust bath. He worked the soil with his hooves to get it just right then he laid down and started to roll. No sooner had he started than Diana spotted him and sashayed over and plopped all 300 pounds of her on top of him, forcing him to get up and give her the spot. All he could do was look on in disgust.

Jack was content with that but noooooo, Diana had to get up and go directly over to Jack and jump on him, biting his neck.

She hit him with enough force to drive him to his knees.

He suddenly grew his cajones back and decided to give her a little taste of her own medicine! He picked her up by the neck and, for the next couple of minutes, slung her around like a ragdoll.

He whispered one final warning in her ear before letting her go.

There, that's much better. My guess is she'll be back at it today though!

Well Mary, after seeing your pic of Isi, I dont think it takes a rocket scientist or a chicken expert (lol) to figure out that he is Jokul's Daddy...or very close relative!

When my flash isnt giving me flashback, you can see that his hackles and saddle feathers are exactly the same shade as Isi's.
I'll try for a natural light pic later this week when we get some sunshine.
