Icelandic Chickens

Thats awesome Jake! Congrats and great job getting ready, thats a key to success with a chicken project! You got any grazing area for your Icelandics? They love the outdoors but I know some folks generally don't have the space to lend a few acres to them, but if you just happen to have the space you will need to be ready to deal with predators and these little blinking red lights are sold in the Puoltry magazines really work! since you are so well prepared on the getting started end I thought you may want to get three or four of these set up for the finish set up! Just a little tip bro!

I took the little blinking lights to heart.

Making a ceramic rooster head that hangs like a gargoyle on the front of the coop, with red blinking eyes.
Going to glaze it like an Icelandic Roo

Well I am almost positive the three with the top knot and mullets came from Kathy, I talked with Kathy and have come to the conclusion(since I forgot to mark who sent what, but I kept them separate in the bator, may have them backward from whom they came!!!) she sent me 11 eggs I think, out of the 11 I had 10 hatch and the three were in those, soooooo I am not sure!!!! As of last night I had 4 from the 14 eggs I got, do you remember how many you sent me and did you mark them???(did you write on the eggs, and you sent me some of the Javas right? I had 4 of them hatch also) , Have not checked yet this morning to see if there are more. I will try to get pics today and post them!!!! Thanks both of you, I am sooooo excited!!! Lynn

Well, even if I get a 100% hatch, there wont be any extra roos !

This week was talking to the 4 H coordinator and her daughter was sitting in, she is a great helping hand, farm style, and when she heard about the Icelandics I had to go online on their puter, and show her this thread. She wants Lukka, and the little brother wants all of the rest

So one pair has a home, and I expect by growout time all the extra roos will have homes, its going to be a multi colored chicken flock in these parts !

I am moving in the next several months so all these younguns will be in pens for pairs or trios, easier to grow them out that way, about the 'standard' 4 sq ft per bird, pretty good for youngsters. I can house about 24 that way, I built these knowing that I will be moving this year.

My turkey poults will have small outside runs, of welded wire panels, easy to set up and move, but we might be moved before they even get here. I am hoping so. The new place has lawn area for a turkey run, and probably some for the Icelandics.

With the snow gone now its hard not to be making plans ahead ! Its going to be a good year.

Congrats Greybear!

Jake, here is my outdoor brooder. It works great! (got it for $300 off craigslist) I can wheel it around and put it where I want it. (this was snow from Dec 09, there was snow on it yesterday, but thankfully the rain through the night melted most of it)

I don't understand the not having crests deal! I was just out in the Icelandic coop and it looks like a beauty salon with every hairdo imaginable. Maybe it is like male pattern baldness and it skip's a generation? I have 44 Icelandics in total and I'll bet more than 3/4 have crests. In fact, if the weather permits tonight, I am going out to do a count when they roost. I swear I'm not holding out on the crested chick eggs!

All of mine have crests, Vindur really has the largest one but Snjór and Blettur have little white things sticking off the back of their heads. I think they'll be pretty hens.

ROOSTERS??? Did someone say roosters? I am quite sure I have plenty to share!

I have to go outside and get a picture of this most beautiful boy I have developing. Honestly, he is the most beautiful blue and has white hackles. He is soooooooo good lookin'!
