Icelandic Chickens

One other thing that I keep forgetting to ask is what are your yearling roos and pullets weighing? And heights?

That could make a difference on the size of the pens that I am about to start building.

Its been kinda hard to gauge them in the pics without something to gauge them by.

Could y'all run out with a camera and yardstick and measure some? Get them to stand on the scales??

Time for another cup and see what else I've fogotten to ask.

I'd say that's probably accurate. I don't have any Icelandics yet, but I've been to Mary's several times.

Thats about right. I have both buttercups and Icelandics and they are just about the same size. My roos are about the size of my BCM hens.

I candled tonight. I had to move alot of eggs around .... some to the hatcher a day late and others in waiting. Anyway, you really do not want to hear all those crazy details. I have 4 eggs from Camelot Farms that are growing! Hoping for crested white PULLETS!!!

My upcoming hatch dates are:
March 23 (50 in lockdown) with 7 Icelandics (I ordered PULLETS from my girls on this one)
March 31 (about 80 after candling) with 4 Icelandics from Camelot Farms

April 11 (the big one!) but no Icelandics cuz I shipped them all out.

OK I'm up at 4am and really just posting so everyone can see my fabulous new username that Kelly gave me! Also uploaded a sign that was posted at my house during clean up....argh....It's true we are up a creek without a paddle but at least we have a boat. We are renting this adorable little cottage on the bay in sandy beach, vallejo, water rushing under the house, deck over looking the water, it's really fun! I'm much farther north now, maybe a trip to sacramento is in order!

What's NOT fun are the chickens. I didn't think I'd ever say that, but I go back to the old/flooded, and now completely gutted house once a day, and I have to work hard to get everyone watered/fed and poop cleaned up, so I don't have any chicken TV time, let alone snuggles. I haven't posted in a bit just because I'm feeling so frustrated and didn't want to burden people.

I have a TON of chicks available so if anyone knows of people looking....send them my way (in my sig line are the breeds) My coronation sussex have started to lay...soon I'll start popping them in the bator for test hatches - how long should I wait??? (Oh I have 2 extra coronation roosters if someone wants them!) Sir Giles is doing his job really well, don't need another one!

Mary that Emu video is hysterical.

Maybe when I'm at the house I'll get a few pics of the icelandics i have and kelly can sex them for me...5 weeks now

I took this picture of the moon yesterday morning from my bed....

Thanks Ladys for the size info, I'll be in very good shape on the size pens I am building. Come end of next winter I can make the pairs into breeding trios, and still have room to house the extra roos, if I have any. Got 3 kids that each want one. Probably more by then. There is going to be an interested gallery watching these younguns grow out.

The sizes I mentioned are about what I was trying to guestimate from the photos, a bird that size makes sense based on the environment that the breed had to survive in for a thousand years. Self feeding also had to be a major requirement as well as hardiness. There is a great deal about this breed to appreciate besides their unique appearances and personality and temperaments.
