Icelandic Chickens

Ryan, I know a lot of people use a mag lite or similar... I built a wooden box with a 450 lumen led lightbulb in it.. It works great.. even on green and dark maran eggs. If you are interested, let me know and I'll take some pictures so you can see how I built it..

I tried to post my guess on your blog too, Mary, but ran into the same snag as thebirdguy: it kept giving me new sets of anti-spam letters to type in, and that was as far as I could get. I was going to say, put me down for a guess of 27 chicks (unless somebody else has already snagged that number!)

Correction....... I DID pet the emu's with pink nail polish on my fingernails. They were mighty interested in my keys and my watch too.

I'm gonna guess 25. Of course I think Jake needs the sign!

Nah, that one belongs to the winner ! I may get a couple big neon ones though to go in my east windows facing the road

I read somewhere that in some petting zoo a big emu grabbed a wedding band right off a womans finger, pretty well wrenched it, but it all turned out well because its now laying gilded eggs !

Thats what I read anyhow

Tuesday my guys here go out to the chicken coop, they will have their own brood lamp, & a mini roost about 16" high and the more adventurous ones can try and get up to Blue/Blau and the Contessa on their roosts! Meanwhile I will have two dog crates for brooders for the new little guys/gals. And Wed I will be at the PO when they open. Going to be a great week !

I have noticed something interesting about these guys the past several weeks, I had started putting some clipped grass in the brooder and then the crate, pulling the grass and then snipping it in 1-2" lengths, they were putting it down right away so daily I just added more, grass plus clover, dandelion greens etc, these little guys will eat far more of that then any other young chickens that I have seen, they are putting down good amounts of the Turkey Starter also, but they do like their greens. When they have had their fill they just leave it. I suspect it has much to do with the breed ranging around farmsteads in a grain poor environment.

Ok here's my candler.. I tried to take a picture of an egg on it but I'm going to have to do some experimenting with camera settings to get it to come out better..

Here's the front.. It plugs in and then the light switch turns it on & off..

Here's the top.. I put felt around the edges of the hole to cushion the egg and seal it up a bit.. not too much light leakage..

Here's the inside.. it has a light base like what you have on the ceiling in the garage usually.. the LED light bulb gives off zero heat and then I made a cone out of mylar to direct as much light as possible up and out the hole..

Here's an egg that is developing.. It's on day 7.. I need to experiment with camera settings to take a picture in the dark of a lit object that is in focus and ... Hey I never claimed to be a photographer.. LOL

:)Kathy, have any of your Icelandics produced varied skin color? I noticed that in your description at the bttom you stated they have differing skin color and I recently saw someone posted they had black skoinned chicks out of Marys eggs. I am scouring mine looking for this but all mine appear to be white skined from every line. I'm just very curioous. Thanks!
