Icelandic Chickens

When I went to shut the coop up for the night this is what I saw. Most of the kids were all ready for bed.

We even have one over achiever in the rafters

Then we have the fashionably late...

Her brother is on the right, in his spot, she landed on her sibling who was non-too-pleased and bucked her off. then Eldvor sent her to the back row, in a less than gentle fashion.

When last seen, they were all settling in. The turkey that hatched and brooded with them was feeling a little left out. I think he's having a bit of an identity crisis and felt he should be up there with them

Mary that sounds wonderful ! I am ready to be at the PO when they open tomorrow ! We had our warmest day yet yesterday, 85 and sunny, today supposed to be 87, these will be the warmest days my dog has ever had, she was born the end of Oct.

I cant believe the colors I have, no two alike even amongst the chipmunks, several of those are purely lovely, and skjotur has the only crest. The Blue laced/dashed seems to be my favorite color, my little white roo has a few dark feathers showing but not enough yet to have an idea of what he will be, I hope the Isi/Lukka roo can come, he will have a forever home.

When you can will you post some more pics of the emus?? The last couple shots with them show a lot different color patterns . How big are they now?

Michelle your guys are beautiful, is that a Narraganset turk? Or Royal Palm?

My chicken house is almost done except the run, thats a this week project,I will start post holes tomorrow, it is a former smoke house, all done of recyled wood, challenging. I am going to try to get it sprayed when its all done, best guess of the previous owner is that it is at least 80 years old. I will send pics, promise. Doesnt look like much, just a former smoke house. Every bit of the interior right now is original, on the outside I added bats and several places other wood over the original , I tried to save as much of the original as I could.

Laura just call it Beautiful.

She is.

Michelle I like the nest boxes, from supplements?

Mary the Silver chick is fascinating, I am going to be spending ALL of my time watching these guys and going out to the Chicken house to see how they are doing, I can see a path getting worn now.

Enjoy everyone,

I am like a little kid waiting for the big day, only now I'm a big kid.I only know of one other flock of Icelandics in MI. And she is on the thread here.

Wow, great pics everyone!!

My first time broody SLW didn't hatch a single chick. Checked the eggs she had left, none were good, a couple had started but there was a lot of poop on them from her tracking in and out or soiling the next so maybe that's why.....not sure. I gave her three golf balls when I took the eggs to check them. Question is....let her have some of the eggs from the incubator or just break her broodiness. I could also let her continue to sit on the golf balls until I hatch something to give her to raise OR give her the one egg Asta has that is due in less than a week and give Asta the eggs in the incubator from Mary that are developing.........hmmm......thinking this last option may be the one....

I got two teen boys that are making some lame attempts at crowing and are grabbing at the teens girls as they pass. They are really asking to go!! Of the ten teens, I have 6 boys and 4 girls. I seem to have more girls than boys from the "week before" and Easter Hatch but since they are in with the Javas and Java/SLW, I haven't gotten an accurate count. Like Kathy, I'm hoping to have 12 to 18 hens to keep with two or three roos (depending on their behavior with the hens and their ability to get along in one combined flock). The 2 1/2 year old hatchery SLW hens will be going. Chickie Mama has a home for life but the other breeder SLW will probably be going as well. I will be keeping a few Am hens from the Mahonri and CrystalCreek eggs in the bator for blue eggs and maybe a BCM hen from Mahonri, if I get one! I have homes for the other Ameraucanas but finding the right homes for the Icelandics........not as easy.

Have a great week everyone!!!

I thinks she's been laying for several weeks, maybe a couple of months. She's pretty big girl now. That picture was taken quite awhile ago. I have so many it is hard to tell when they start laying because they start practicing before they really start. Where's the picture?
