Icelandic Chickens

I have 10 new chicks hatched and see a couple more pips.

I searched for the missing black chick this morning. No luck there......

If this stupid internet server will stay on long enough I will upload pictures.

CONTEST WINNER!
The winner of the contest is Connie, BYC username farmerinKC with a guess of 24. The actual number of chicks hatched was 22. Connie is a new egg to BYC with only 22 posts and is brand new to chicken raising. Congratulations Connie! Second place, no prize

, goes to HappyChooks with her guess of 25. I guess her prize will be if I decide to clean her incubator before returning it!

Thanks to everyone for playing along. Perhaps we should do this again for Shawn's hatch? Hmmmm.

Congrats on the hatch Kathy! I have three eggs left in the incubator but don't think much is going on there. One pipped early yesterday and has done nothing since. The other two haven't pipped. I'll give them a little more time. I am sorry you haven't found the chick yet. Maybe it will become your "Stella" and you will catch glimpses of it in the woods from time to time. Looking forward to pics of the new hatch!

I have a rooster that very color! With a crest to! Was she laying back when you shipped me the first batch of eggs?

I thinks she's been laying for several weeks, maybe a couple of months. She's pretty big girl now. That picture was taken quite awhile ago. I have so many it is hard to tell when they start laying because they start practicing before they really start. Where's the picture?

No, one pipped yesterday and didn't do anything since then and two haven't pipped. I candled and at least one has very slight movement that I can see. I'll leave them for awhile and see what they do.

I hear ya! I have had 18 so far this year and I only have 35 hens and 16 pullets. I broke the first 7, let the 8th hatch and now she is occupying my broody buster. So now I have 10 sitting and growling
ladies...My Orps and Ameraucanas are the worst and are repeat and multiple offenders.

Now you are telling me my NH's and BR's will be broody inclined as well?

YES! Isn't that just crazy?!

Well, my project chicks should produce broody inclined Dels, eh? LOL I was hoping for that in them.

Cody is building a broody coop. It should be done tomorrow. He still has to paint it and put on the doors. It is 8x4 and will be divided in half. This is for broodies with their chicks. I am using my Nella brooders for hens setting..... that itself is 4. I am also using a dog house for the Orp. I may need to adopt Lisa's broody idea. Remember her picture of all the broodies?

That is what I did last week for all my crazy broodies. I like your set up better, though. 90% chance if they get up, they will still sit on eggs, somewhere.

I spent the weekend cleaning, and the house is still a mess.

CHICKENSTORY #1: I had a batch of chicks due the 30th, but they started pipping on the 27th. Then....nothing. So I checked, and 15 eggs were pipped, and shrinkwrapped. 10ish were still alive. Same deal with my broody with eggs on the 30th. It has been SOOOOOO dry and hot, I have had all the doors and windows open. Unfortunately, the bator is between front and back doors, where the cross-wind blows. (wind not breeze. hello, Phoenix!)

Long story short, I spent all of Saturday pipping, de-shelling, re-wrapping in warm wet paper towels, putting back in bator, waiting for the chicks to pull the blood in from the membrane, and subsequently sqeezing them out of the inner membrane.

After all was said and done, I think I had 8 chicks make it. AND THEY ARE ALL THE WRONG COLOR! THey were ordered eggs (for my breeding priject), and apparently the lady doesnt have what she thinks she has, because now my broody has all 8 teeny weeny adorable babies. She's happy, at least.

CHICKENSTORY #2:
It got hot-hot, I usually lose birds (any birds that will die of heatstrole) to heatstroke once it hits 100 degrees. That was Friday. 2 of my Easter hatch NNs got stuck where there was no shade or water. One was the only NN hen *sniff*.

CHICKENSTORY #3:
The chicks I ordered in December from the feed store finally showed up, even though they were supposedly cancelled (too hot to ship). Broody #2 got surprise Orloffs, so she is a happy camper.
