The emus are a little over two months old and tall enough to go though my pockets. They are practicing on blackbirds right now but have their sights set on the Jack Russell Terriers.
Remember how I thought about taking the one egg Asta was on and giving it to the SLW who didn't hatch any from the 10 Icelandic eggs and then giving Asta the eggs Mary sent me that are in the bator?.................too late!!
I went out to collect the layer eggs and said hi to Asta in her nest and I heard a peep! I looked, and sure enough, there was a little face peeking out! Called my friend to tell her I had a chick and she says, "Remember when you gave me those four eggs for my broody hen? (Oh, yeah, now that she mentions it, I set the ten Asta eggs under the SLW and then she asked for eggs, the only ones I had were the four that Asta had laid after the 10 that I gave the SLW...so I gave them to her...figuring Asta wasn't as broody as I thought she might be...and not wanting any crossed to get hatched, I gave them to her...not remembering until she mentions it.....getting old is hard on the memory banks!) Well, I got three new babies here as well!! Born Tuesday and Wednesday. Do you just want me to leave them with my hen or do you want them?" Just leave them I told her, hate taking babies from moms unless they're bad moms. So I have four new Icelandic babies!!!
Here is a pic of Asta being stubborn about showing off the baby. She is poofed up to about twice her size.
I stuck my hand in to move her and she tried to peck me......when she did...the chick came out behind her.
Then Asta started pecking at the ground in front of her and talking to the chick and it came around right in front of me.
Here she (
) is having her (Kelly, girl, yes?) first Startena.
One dozen in the bator from Mary are doing fine......will candle on Monday before locking down on Tuesday and let you know how many developed!
Love my Icelandics!!
Thanks again Mary for starting this thread and getting me started with this wonderful breed!
