I was worried that they would be too cold. My shipping containers were for 50 chicks with a divider in the middle. I rearranged it to put all the chicks in the center with two smaller empty areas on each side. Plus there were so may air holes! It's not 100 degrees in Idaho is it? Cripes we haven't been out of the 60's in weeks! Our normal would be 85 degrees plus this time of year.

Ohhhhh 60 degrees.

It seems like we went from 70 to 100 in a day. Today it was 102 and I had a rooster collapse, and he was in the shade.

I would be ecstatic with 85!

Oh yeah, a bigger box. Hmmmm, I imagine it is much cooler in Idaho. The hatcheries never use heat packs, do they? I don't know. Well, I know you will make the right choice.

Kathy, when you sent mine did you use a heating pad? There were 11 in the 25 sized box. They made it in good shape.

ETA: I looked back at our temps during that time...

The day they shipped high was 80 and low was 49.
The day they arrived high of 73 and low was 47. But I picked them up at 8 am, so they were no where near the high

It's supposed to be in the low 60s Wed & Thurs here with lows in the low to mid 40s... We might get to 70 on Friday.... I don't think you would need 4 heat packs for sure probably just one would be more than enough... Maybe you could cover the holes on a side or two to help with excess ventilation if you think there are too many. I don't think the big hatcheries ever put in heat packs.. they just have minimum size orders so there are enough chicks to keep each other warm.

Counting down the hours now...

Mary four were plenty, it was a mild weather those couple of days, not as cold as any of the eggs came in. I think one would have been plenty. The chicks are doing great, growing like they invented the idea.

We had a beautiful rain last eve. all gardens got a good soaking, no hand watering for at least a week !

More later, leaving early for a long training day and long drive to and from, gas really hurts on this.

Morning update. I have been up since 4:00 a.m. with 8 roosters crowing in cages in my garage.

They are going to their new home hopefully soon this morning! I emailed my friend and begged him to come earlier than our scheduled 9:00 a.m. appointment. They are fighting a lot too so next time I am going to have to do something different like maybe separate cardboard boxes for each one. That way it will be dark and hopefully they won't crow and they can't fight. Anyway I am worn out and it is only 6:15!

Update on Shawn's hatch.

14 are out now, one still resting in the incubator, and 13 in the Nursery bator. I think 3 more are pipped and nothing from the remaining 10. One pipped through a blood vessel and died. Here are the first 13: Really nice assortment of colors. Nothing exotic yet and surprisingly, no pure blondies! I see some blues in here though.
