Icelandic Chickens

Dang it!! my nine little icelandics were doing great and everyone was ok at 3 this morning.. I just checked on them and one of the blonde chipmunks was dead... Everyone else is doing just fine... I lost a 5+ week old turkey poult the same way last week... no reason, just great one minute and gone the next... wish I knew why... I think that's 4 this year that have done that at various ages...

I spent 1/2 a day shuffling birds around yesterday... moved the oldest ones out to the farm into the new coop and then the oldest icelandics and their friends out to the outdoor brooder.. they were getting a little crowded in the other brooders. They are all good this morning and seem to really like being outside and the extra room..

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!!! Gorgeous birds Kathy!!

My little freaks from Kathy spent the first night in the big coop last night! They are big chickens now too! I had blocked the pop door opening with my net so they couldn't run back out after we herded them through the big doors. I forgot to move it after the pop door closed, so it was still there this morning. I expected to go out and find Blind Lucy tangled in it but she wasn't. I could hear a lot of complaining from inside though. I moved the net and guess who was the first one to march down the ramp?----------- Skye's baby, Little Brown Mouse! Not Stella, not Judge Judy, not Martha Stewart, but Little Brown Mouse! She is representin' as the only Icelandic in the layer coop. I actually laughed out loud.

I could hear peeping in the hatchers. I was frantic. Worried about the new hatches, the ones in the bator, the ones in recovery, etc.

I took 2 wet ones and carried them in my bra for warmth, until they were dry. I had the hatcher covered with a blanket. I could hear chirping. I removed the dry babies from my bra, and moved in 3 eggs that were zipping. Yes, they all 3 hatched. I had no hope of getting anything else, and went to sleep (while hatching). 4 hours after power resumed I have 5 chicks that did hatch. 3 Icelandics and 2 Orps.

I'm sorry Kathy, but at the stage of hatching, I think the temp is less critical on the eggs. But I'd be a nervous wreck about the ones already hatched!

How many eggs do you have left that you are waiting on hatching?

The huddling chicks during the power outage. I ended up putting them in 2 small boxes with wash cloths, to avoid piling, and covering them. That, after I about gave them heat stroke in the car with full heat.

I probably can't post the other pictures.
