Icelandic Chickens

Speaking of nests..............
I noticed some of my girls like hanging around the junk pile. When we had the furnace worked on the repairman was gonna haul off the old parts and I told him to leave them. I thought I might be able to make a nest out of this one part. Looks like the girls read my mind.

Lukka's little brown chipmunk baby is missing. We have looked everywhere and can't see it or hear it. Yesterday we did see a Cooper's hawk swoop low . I just don't know what happened to the baby but we moved Lukka (kicking and screaming) and the four remaining babies up to the safety of the fenced and covered layer coop and yard. We'll go out after the sun sets and see of we can hear it. I let her raise her other babies in the Icelandic coop and free range to give them the Iceland experience but it turns out I don't have the stomach for it. I imagine more babies are lost on the uninhabited area of iceland than live to adulthood. So I'll let them brood and hatch in the brooder hotel then move them up here until they are big enough to stay out of trouble. RIP little baby if we don't find you.

Oh shoot! I hope ya find the baby. Darn it!

I don't think those eggs are fertile. They are from new layers. I have all the girls in the layers coop with only one cockerel. He is "just learning." Besides that, I do NOT need anymore chicks around here! I broke ALL my broodies!

However, I just came in from locking up and I saw a Barred Rock girl on the nest.

It is 9PM and still 96* here. I soooooooo hated to close the doors on the coops tonight. Geeezzzz, poor birds.

Traps are set. Will check at midnight and see if we got anything like we did last night at that time.

I hatched a diabolical plot. Do you remember the little silver and orange chick that I love so much? I took it out of the brooder and gave it to Lukka to replace the baby she lost. There is nothing like the love that Lukaa has for babies. It is her baby now.
